SATURDAY
26TH JANUARY 2019 CE AND 19TH JUMUDAL ULA 1440 AH
BismillahWalhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala
Rasulillah. As-Salaam AlaikumWa-RahmatullahiWa-Barakatuhu.
Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness.
We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad
deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah
leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but
Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (Sallalhu alaihi Wa salam) is His
slave and Messenger.
Subject: Anyone Who Has Pride In His Heart Will Enter Paradise
Holy Quran,
Allah says:
And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied
about Allah [with] their faces blackened. Is there not in Hell a residence for
the arrogant? Quran Surah Zumar 39:60
[To them] it will be said, “Enter the gates of Hell to abide
eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant.” Quran Surah
Zumar 39:72
in the Hadith;
It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud(R) that the Messenger of
Allah (ﷺ)
said, “Anyone who possesses half a mustard seed of Pride (kibr) in his heart
will not be granted admission to Paradise. And anyone who possesses half a
mustard seed of Eemaan will not enter the (Eternal) Fire.” Sahih Muslim 91,
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1998 and Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 5, Book 37, Hadith 4173
Amr ibn Shu’ayb via his father and grandfather that the
Prophet (ﷺ)
said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be gathered like ants in
the form of men. Humiliation will overwhelm them from all sides. They will be
driven to a prison in Hell called Bawlas, with the hottest fire rising over
them, and they will be given to drink of the juice of the inhabitants of Hell,
which is teenat al-khabaal.” Jami at-Tirmidhi, 2492; classed as hasan by
al-Albani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi 2025
The Kinds and
Degrees of Kibr
It should be noted that there are different degrees of kibr,
similar to the stages,
1. Kibr on account of possessing
true faith and belief.
2. As opposed to it is the pride in
invalid faith and false belief .
3. Pride on account of good
qualities and praiseworthy attributes.
4. Pride in moral vices and
undesirable qualities.
5. Pride in one’s righteous deeds
and devotional exercises.
6. Pride in sinful and wicked deeds.
As to the Kibr towards God, it is the most abominable, the
most destructive, and the highest degree of pride, and is present in infidels,
those who contest God’s authority, and those who make claims to divinity.
Sometimes its traces are seen among some men of faith as well. This kind of
kibr signifies the extreme of ignorance and the absence of knowledge about
one’s limits and the majesty of the Necessary Being.
Kibr that openly opposes and negates Eemaan results in the
removal of the one who holds it from entering al-Jannah as is found in Allah’s
statement, And your Lord says,
“Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” Indeed, those who disdain
My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible. Quran Surah Ghafir 40:60
Kibr of Iblees
and others
This is the Kibr of Iblees (the Devil), Pharaoh and all the
others who possessed the Kibr, which invalidated Eemaan. The first one who
showed arrogance towards Allaah and His creation was the accursed Iblees, when
Allaah commanded him to prostrate to Adam and he refused and was arrogant, and
said, “I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You
created from clay.” This is also the Kibr that the children of Israel possess
and those whom Allaah has described to us by saying:
And We did certainly give Moses the Torah and followed up
after him with messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and
supported him with the Pure Spirit. But is it [not] that every time a messenger
came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you
were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you
killed. Quran Surah Baqrah 2:87
Arrogance is
one of the characteristics of Iblees
Arrogance is one of the characteristics of Iblees, so
whoever wants to be arrogant should realize that he is acquiring a
characteristic of the devils, and that he is not acquiring a characteristic of
the noble angels who obeyed their Lord and fell down prostrate. Pride is an
attribute that is not befitting for anyone except Allaah. Whoever seeks to
compete with Allaah in that, Allaah will destroy him, wreak vengeance on him
and make things difficult for him.
The Prophet ﷺ said,
“No one who has an atom’s-weight of Pride in his heart will
enter Paradise.” A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if a man likes
his clothes and his shoes to look good?” He ﷺ
said, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty, Pride means rejecting the truth and
looking down on people” [Sahih Muslim].
Commentary:
The word or the name for arrogance/pride in Arabic is ‘Kibr’. This is the inner quality of
pride. The name of the outward quality is ‘Takabbur’ which means
arrogance.
Arrogance is a blameworthy characteristic which is the
feature of Iblees and his followers in this world, those on whose hearts Allah
Ta'ala has placed a seal.
Eleven
(11) Signs of a Person Having Pride/Arrogance are stated hereunder:
1)
He doesn’t like others to have what
he has
2)
He cannot avoid anger
3)
He cannot avoid being jealous of
others
4)
He doesn’t accept advice from
others
5)
He doesn’t want to listen or accept
advice from a learned person or even attend lessons
6)
When advising people he always puts
them down
7)
When speaking he will say good remarks about
himself
8)
When he speaks he speaks with pride
to let people know he has knowledge
9)
He deals with people in bad
way
10) He
walks in bad way
11) He
has looks down at people because he is wealthier, or has a better appearance.
The
cure for arrogance involves Knowledge and Action which involves the following
remedies:
·
Firstly, you should know and
recognise your Lord and know and recognise your own self as you should be
recognised, and that you are not worthy of greatness and that true greatness
and pride are only for Allah Ta'ala
·
Secondly, you should think of
yourself as being just like other people and realize that they are like you;
they were born from a mother and a father just as you were, and that taqwa
(piety, fear of Allah) is the true criterion of superiority.
·
*Allah Ta'ala says (interpretation
of the meaning): “Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that
(believer) who has At Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqoon (the pious)” [Holy
Quran Chapter Al-Hujuraat, 49:13].
۞
O mankind! We created you from a
single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes,
that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the
most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of
you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).
·
And finally, know and realize that
on the Day of Resurrection the person with pride will be gathered in a small
form like an ant which will be trampled underfoot as *The Prophet ﷺ
said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be gathered like ants
in the form of men. Humiliation will overwhelm them from all sides. They will
be driven to a prison in Hell called Bawlas, with the hottest fire rising over
them, and they will be given to drink of the juice of the inhabitants of Hell,
which is teenat al-khabaal*” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi].
Arrogant people are hated by other people just as they are
hated by Allah Ta'ala; people love humble, tolerant and gentle people, and they
hate those who are harsh and cruel to people.
Conclusion
It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri(R) and Abu
Hurayrah(R) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
said: “Might is His garment and pride is His cloak; whoever seeks to compete
with Me concerning them, I will punish him.” Sunan Abi Dawud 4090 and Sunan Ibn
Majah Vol. 5, Book 37, Hadith 4174
Everyone who tries to be arrogant and put himself above
others, Allaah will bring him down among the lowest of the low, and will
humiliate him, because he is going against reality, so Allaah will punish him
by thwarting his aims; the punishment is to fit the crime.
And Allah knows best!
