Sunday 24th Dhul Qa’ada 1442 AH and 4th July 2021 CE

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum WA-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu.

Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad () is His slave and Messenger.

Help us Answer the Ummah! Every second, everywhere someone needs an answer. The Prophet () said: “A person who leads others to doing what is good will earn the same reward as those who do it.” (Muslim, 1893).

“Do not lose hope, nor be sad. You will surely be victorious if you are true in Faith.” And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].” [Holy Quran Chapter Al Imran Ayah 139]

“If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely.”

[Holy Quran Chapter Imran Ayah 160]

Preamble

The best answer to the question “What is Quran” is provided by Allah Himself – the Lord and Rabb of everything that is ever created and exists. The following are some of the descriptions about Quran within the Quran asserting its authority as a Divine Book revealed for the entire humanity at large.

1.0 Quran Is Undoubtedly The Word Of Allah (God)

Quran is a book that is the word of Allah (God) and there is no doubt about its divinity. The claim is made by no one but Allah Himself.

This is the Book (the Quran), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqoon (the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)). Quran Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 2)

Allah makes it clear in the Quran that it could not have been revealed by anyone other than Him. He says:

And this Qur’an is not such as could ever be produced by other than Allah (Lord of the heavens and the earth), but it is a confirmation of (the revelation) which was before it [i.e. the Taurat (Torah), and the Injeel (Gospel)], and a full explanation of the book (i.e. laws, decreed for mankind) – wherein there is no doubt – from the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn, and all that exists). Quran Surah Younus, Verse 37)

2.0 Quran is the book of Truth

Since time immemorial people have been arguing about “truth” and the criteria to determine the “truth”. Allah makes it clear in the Quran about “ultimate truth.” No book on entity has made such a universal claim with such an authority. The Quran is the Book of Allah with a message of truth for all of mankind:

“Verily, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad (Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam)) the Book (this Quran) for mankind in truth. So whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for his own self, and whosoever goes astray, he goes astray only for his (own) loss. And you (O Muhammad ((Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam))) are not a Wakeel (trustee or disposer of affairs, or keeper) over them.” Quran Surah Al-Zumar, Verse 41)

Allah also says:

These are the Verses of the Book (the Quran), and that which has been revealed unto you (Muhammad (S)) from your Lord is the truth, but most men believe not. Quran Surah Ar-Raad, Verse 1)

3.0 Quran is a book that discusses mankind (and their guidance)

Allah tells us that He revealed a book that includes teachings and guidance related to mankind, so we should follow it. He says:

Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind) a book (the Quran) in which there is Dhikrukum, (your Reminder or an honor for you i.e. honor for the one who follows the teaching of the Quran and acts on its teachings). Will you not then understand? Quran Surah Al-Anbiya, Verse 10)

Allah also says:

And indeed We have fully explained to mankind, in this Quran, every kind of similitude, but most mankind refuse (the truth and accept nothing) but disbelief. Quran Surah Al-Isra, 17:89]

3.0 Quran brings ones life out of darkness into light

“It is He Who sends down manifest Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) to His slave (Muhammad) that He may bring you out from darkness into light. Quran Surah al-Hadeed, Verse 9)

4.0 Belief in the Quran is part of being righteous and pious

Allah tells us in the Quran the various criteria of being righteous and pious, one of which is the faith in this book (Quran).

It is no virtue that you turn your faces towards the east or the west, but virtue is that one should sincerely believe in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the Book and the Prophets and, out of His love, spend of one’s choice wealth for relatives and orphans, for the needy and the wayfarer, for beggars and for the ransom of slaves, and establish the Salat and pay the Zakat. And the virtuous are those who keep their pledges when they make them and show fortitude in hardships and adversity and in the struggle between the Truth and falsehood; such are the truthful people and such are the pious. Quran Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 177)

5.0 Quran was revealed to be recited for its followers

As the Quranic verse below indicates, Allah has asked Quran’s followers to give its right of recitation (to be followed). He says in the Quran:

Those (who embraced Islam from Bani Israel) to whom We gave the book [the Taurat (Torah)] [or those (Muhammad’s companions) to whom We have given the book (the Quran)] recite it (i.e. obey its orders and follow its teachings) as it should be recited (i.e. followed), they are the ones who believe therein. And whoso disbelieve in it (the Quran), those are they who are the losers. (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi). Quran Surah A-Baqarah, Verse 121)

6.0 Quran is Allah’s words that was brought by Angel Jibraeel to Prophet Muhammad [Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam]

Allah provides the answer about how Quran was brought to the prophet [Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam].

“And verily, you (O Muhammad ((Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam))) are receiving the Quran from the One, All-Wise, All-Knowing” Quran Surah An-Naml, Verse 6)

7.0 Quran is Allah’s word that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad in stages

When Quran was being revealed to the prophet ((Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam)), the disbelievers of his time asked as to why the entire book was not revealed all at once. To this Allah responded in the Quran:

“And those who disbelieve say: Why is not the Quran revealed to him all at once? Thus (it is sent down in parts), that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually, in stages” Quran Surah Al-Furqan Verse 32)

8.0 Nothing like Quran can be written or produced

In the Quran, Allah has challenged mankind and the jinn to produce something like it, even one surah or One Aayah (Verse), but they could not do that and will never be able to do that, as Allah says:

Say: “If the mankind and the jinns were together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another.” Quran Surah Al-Isra, Verse 88)

Allah also says in the Quran:

“And if you (Arab Pagans, Jews, and Christians) are in doubt concerning that, which We have sent down (i.e. the Quran) to Our slave (Muhammad ((Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam))), then produce a Surah (chapter) of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allah, if you are truthful.” Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 23)

9.0 Quran is a divine revelation that should be treated as such

Allah emphasizes the greatness of the Quran by providing an example in the following verse:

“Had We sent down this Quran on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rending asunder by the fear of Allah. Such are the parables, which We put forward to mankind that they may reflect.” [Surah Al-Hashr, 59:21]

10.0 Quran is Allah’s (God’s) final revelation to mankind that has remain unchanged since its revelation

Quran is not only Allah’s final word but Allah Himself has taken the pledge to safeguard it from any corruption. As a result, we see that Quran today is in the same form as it was revealed by Allah on Prophet Muhammad (Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam). All other revealed books except the Quran have been changed and distorted over time. The Quran is and will remain, intact in its original form till the Day of Judgment. Allah has sent down Quran to mankind and has guaranteed to preserve it, taking upon Himself the responsibility of preserving it till the last day. Allah says:

“It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption).” Quran Surah Al-Hijr, Verse 9)

11.0 Quran provides a complete code of living life and guidance for preparing for the hereafter

Quran is a blessing for mankind to be able to live peaceful lives on this earth and has guidance to help mankind prepare for the hereafter as well. Allah says:

“… And We have sent down to you the Book (the Quran), as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims).” Quran Surah An-Nahl, Verse 89)

12.0 Quran is a book of healing

Quran is a means of both physical and spiritual healing. Allah says in the Quran:

“O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Quran, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.) in your breasts, – a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers.”Quran Surah Younus, 57)

Allah also says:

And We sent down in the Quran such things that have healing and mercy for the believers. Quran Surah Al-Isra, Verse 82)

13.0 Quran’s message has no crookedness or contradictions

Allah says in the Quran:

Do they not then consider the Qur’an carefully? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein many a contradiction. Quran Surah An-Nisa, Verse 82)

He also says:

“All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has sent down to His slave (Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salaam) the Book (the Quran), and has not placed therein any crookedness.” Quran Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 1)

14.0 Reasons to Read the Glorious Qur’an

14.1 Inimitable

It dares you to disprove it. How? It says that humans cannot write a book like this even if they pooled all their resources together and got help also from the spirits. The Qur’an said this issue fourteen hundred years ago and yet no one has been able to disprove it. Billions of books have been writ-ten-but not another one like the Qur’an.

14.2 Incorruptible

It is the only religious sacred writing that has been in circulation for such a long time and yet remains as pure as it was in the beginning. The Qur’an was kept intact. Nothing was added to it; nothing was changed in it; and nothing was taken away from it ever since its revelation was completed 1400 years ago.

13.3 Unsurpassable

The Qur’an is God’s final revelation to humankind. God revealed the Torah to Moses, the Psalms to David, the Gospel to Jesus, and finally the Qur’an to Muhammad. Peace be upon Moses, David, Je-sus and Muhammad. No other book will come from God to surpass His final revelation.

14.4 Indisputable

The Qur’an withstands the test of time and scrutiny. No one can dispute the truth of this book. It speaks about past history and turns out right. It speaks about the future in prophecies and it turns out right. It mentions details of physical phenomena which were not known to people at the time; yet later scientific discoveries prove that the Qur’an was right all along. Every other book needs to be revised to accord with modern know-ledge. The Qur’an alone is never contradicted by a newly discovered scientific fact.

14.5 Your Roadmap for Life and Afterlife

The Qur’an is the best guidebook on how to structure your life. No other book presents such a comprehensive system involving all aspects of hu-man life. The Qur’an also points out the way to secure everlasting happi-ness in the afterlife. It is your roadmap showing how to get to Paradise.

14.6 God’s Gift of Guidance

God has not left you alone. You were made for a reason. God tells you why he made you, what he demands from you and what he has in store for you. If you operate a machine contrary to its manufacturer’s specification you will ruin that machine. What about you? Do you have an owner’s manual for yourself? The Qur’an is from your Maker. It is a gift for you to make sure you function for success, lest you fail to function. It is a healing from God. It satisfies the soul, and cleans the heart. It re-moves doubts and brings peace.

14.7 Your Calling Card to Communicate with your Lord

Humans are social creatures. We love to communicate with other intelligent life. The Qur’an tells us how to communicate with the source of all intelligence and the source of all life. The Qur’an tells us who God is, by what name we should address Him, and the way in which to communicate with Him. Are these not seven sufficient reasons for reading the Qur’an?

15.0 What is the ruling on describing the Qur’an as the eternal word of Allah?

The Holy Qur’an is the word of Allah, may He be exalted, its words, letters and meanings. It originated from Him and will return to Him. It was uttered by Allah, may He be exalted, and heard from Him by Jibreel (peace be upon him), who brought it down to Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Allah, may He be glorified, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“That (this) is indeed an honourable recital (the Noble Qur’an).

In a Book well-guarded (with Allah in the heaven i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfooz).

Which (that Book with Allah) none can touch but the purified (i.e. the angels)”

[al-Waaqi‘ah 56:77-80]

“Alif Laam Meem. (These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’an, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.)

The revelation of the Book (this Qur’an) is from the Lord of the Alameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists) in which there is no doubt”[Holy Quran Cheater as-Sajdah 32:1,2]

“The revelation of this Book (the Qur’an) is from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise”[ Holy Quran Cheater az-Zumar 39:1].

The Qur’an comes under the heading of His words or speech, which is one of His attributes. Therefore whoever says that it is created is a disbeliever. This is the belief of Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa‘ah, in contrast to the beliefs of deviant groups.

At-Tahhaawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his famous book al-‘Aqeedah:

The Qur’an is the word of Allah, which originated from Him – without discussing how it was spoken. He sent it down to His Messenger by means of revelation (wahy). The believers bear witness to its revelation. They are certain that it is the actual words of Allah. It is not created like the words of human beings. Whoever hears it and thinks that it is the words of human beings is a disbeliever; Allah has condemned him, criticised him and warned him of hellfire as He, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“I will cast him into Hell-fire” [al-Muddaththir 74:26]. Because Allah has given the warning of hellfire to those who say “ ‘This is nothing but the word of a human being’” [al-Muddaththir 74:25], we know with certainty that it is the words of the Creator of human beings, and is not like the words of human beings. End quote.

Ibn Qudaamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Part of the speech of Allah, may He be glorified, is the Holy Qur’an, which is the clear Book of Allah, His strong rope and straight path, the revelation of the Lord of the Worlds, which was brought down by the Trustworthy Spirit (ar-Rooh al-Ameen, i.e., Jibreel) to the heart of the leader of the Messengers, in a clear Arabic tongue, revealed not created. It originated from Him and will return to Him. It consists of clear soorahs and clear verses, letters and words. Whoever recites it clearly and correctly will have for each letter ten hasanaat. It has a beginning and an end, and consists of parts (ajza’) and smaller sections. It is recited on people’s lips and is memorised in their hearts, listened to and written in the Mus-hafs. It has both clear and ambiguous verses, that which abrogates and that which is abrogated, general and specific words, commands and prohibitions.

“Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise (Allah )”[ Holy Quran Cheater Fussilat 41:42]

“Say: ‘If the mankind and the jinns were together to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another’”[ Holy Quran Cheater al-Isra’ 17:88].

The Unbelievers say: "We shall neither believe in this scripture nor in (any) that (came) before it." Couldst thou but see when the wrong-doers will be made to stand before their Lord, throwing back the word (of blame) on one another! Those who had been despised will say to the arrogant ones: "Had it not been for you, we should certainly have been believers!" (31)

It is this Arabic book of which those who disbelieve say: “‘We will never believe in this Qur’an’” [Saba’ 34:31] and some of them said: “ ‘This is nothing but the word of a human being’” [Holy Quran Cheater al-Muddaththir 74:25], so Allah, may He be glorified, said: “I will cast him into Hell-fire” [Holy Quran Cheater al-Muddaththir 74:26].

There is no difference of opinion among the Muslims that whoever rejects a soorah, verse, word or letter of the Qur’an on which there is agreement is a disbeliever, and this offers definitive proof that it consists of letters. End quote.

Lam‘at al-I‘tiqaad (p. 22-28)

What is meant by the words of Ahl as-Sunnah, “it originated from Him”, is that Allah, may He be exalted, uttered it, so its original appearance and its beginning was from Allah, may He be exalted.

What is meant by their words, “it will return to Him”, is that it will be taken away from people’s hearts and from the Mus-hafs at the end of time, and not one verse of it will remain in people’s hearts or in the Mus-hafs, as is mentioned in a number of reports.

Al-Haafiz Diya’ ad-Deen al-Maqdisi (d. 643) wrote an essay on this topic entitled Ikhtisaas al-Qur’an bi’l-Awd ila ar-Rahmaan.

The innovators have many other views that are contrary to what is indicated by sheer common sense and the soundly narrated texts concerning this matter, which you may check and learn the scholars’ refutations thereof in the books of Ahl as-Sunnah that deal with this topic, including books that deal specifically with refutation of the innovators’ views on the divine attribute of speech, such as al-Burhaan fi Mas’alat al-Qur’an and Hikaayat al-Munaazarah fi’l-Qur’an, both of which are by Muwaffaq ad-Deen Ibn Qudaamah, the author of al-Mughni (may Allah have mercy on him). Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) also wrote several books and essays having to do with the issue of the divine attribute of speech. See vol. 12 of his Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa; one of his most important books on that topic is at-Tis‘eeniyyah, which is a refutation of the Ash‘aris’ innovated views concerning the divine attribute of speech, based on approximately ninety points.

With regard to contemporary books, this issue has been dealt with specifically in a book by Shaykh ‘Abdullah al-Judayyi‘ entitled al-‘Aqeedah as-Salafiyyah fi Kalaam Rabb al-Bariyyah, which is a useful book on this topic.

Whoever hears it and thinks that it is the words of human beings is a disbeliever; Allah has condemned him, criticised him and warned him of hellfire as He, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “I will cast him into Hell-fire” [al-Muddaththir 74:26].

It is this Arabic book of which those who disbelieve say: “ ‘We will never believe in this Qur’an’” [Saba’ 34:31] and some of them said: “ ‘This is nothing but the word of a human being’” [Holy Quran Cheater al-Muddaththir 74:25], so Allah, may He be glorified, said: “I will cast him into Hell-fire” [Holy Quran Cheater al-Muddaththir 74:26].
