SATURDAY 25TH FEBRUARY 2017 CE AND 28TH JUMAADA AWWAL 1438 AH

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu

BACKGROUND - THE SIRAT BRIDGE is the bridge to hell that is no wider than a hair. It is the final test of believers after the Field of Resurrection. The Sirat Bridge may sound like a typical bridge or suspension bridge as we see in the world. First of all, as the Hereafter is not like this world, the Sirat is not like a bridge as we know it. Our beloved Prophet stressed and warned his Ummah that the Sirat Bridge is sharper than a sword and narrow than a hair and that it is very difficult to pass over this bridge.
THE SIRAT CROSSING THE BRIDGE OF SIRAAT - UNDERSTANDING THE FIRE

Not a single person will be able to escape from walking over this bridge – neither the people of Paradise, nor the people of Hell. Allah says in the Qur’an:

(٧٠) وَإِن مِّنكُمۡ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا‌ۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ حَتۡمً۬ا مَّقۡضِيًّ۬ا (٧١) ثُمَّ نُنَجِّى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَواْ وَّنَذَرُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ فِيہَا جِثِيًّ۬ا (٧٢)

“And there is not one of you but shall come to it, this is an unavoidable decree of your Lord. And we will deliver those who guarded (against evil), and we will leave the unjust therein on their knees.” (Holy Quran chapter 19:71-72). The Holy Prophet said that this bridge contains seven Passes (Aqabat). There will be stations in each Pass and each station will be 70 Farsakh (1 Farsakh = 5.5 km) long, and 70,000 Angels will be posted at each Pass. Those who safely pass through all seven Passes will arrive at the Abode of Permanence (Dar al-Baqa), where they will live an everlasting life without any troubles.

In another well-known narration, the Prophet (SAW) said, Hell-Fire will be brought forth on the Day of Judgment with 70,000 zimaam each pulled by 70,000 Angels,” (Muslim). The word zimaam is usually translated as “chains” but a more fitting translation is “leashes”. What do leashes restrain? They restrain animals. Hell-Fire is a living, breathing monster. To put this into perspective, let us remember the magnificent creation of the Angels. The Prophet (SAW) described the Angels who hold Allah’s Throne saying, “The distance between his ear-lobes and his shoulders is equivalent to a seven-hundred-year journey,” (Abu Dawud). The Angels are not a small creation, and they will be pulling and restraining this monster.

Allah (SWT) describes the animalistic nature of the Fire in the Qur’an: “When the Hellfire sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring,” (Qur’an25:12). Before the inhabitants of the Fire even see it, they will hear its anger and rage from far away. Allah (SWT) uses a human emotion to describe the Fire, gaydh, which means a furious anger and rage. Why is the Fire angry? The scholars say that it is angry at peoples’ disbelief and disobedience to Allah (SWT)! Allah (SWT) tells us how the Fire will roar: “When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a (dreadful) inhaling while it boils up. It almost bursts with rage […]” (Qur’an 67:7-8).

WHO WILL PASS OVER THE SIRAT BRIDGE?
Allah Almighty says: “And there is not one of you but shall come to it; this is an unavoidable decree of your Lord.” (Maryam, 71). Allah Almighty declares that everyone will definitely come to Hell and that the Sirat Bridge will be built upon Hell. The AL-SIRAT is a long and narrow bridge that everyone will have to pass through before entering Heaven. It is believed to be a “bridge over Hell”. The Quran does not say anything about this bridge, except in Surah Maryam, which could possibly be referring to the bridge. In that verse it says, "There is not one of you ...but will pass over it: this is, with your Lord, a decree which must be accomplished" (Holy Quran Surah 19:71).
It has been said that this bridge will be a reflection of one’s life in this Dunyia. The more a person saves himself from evil actions the more it will be easier for him to pass over it. Judgment day on whole is going to be very hard but particularly this time will be harder than any other time. That’s why we do special Dua for the strength and help of ALLAH (SWT) while crossing it.
We have no choice in who our parents are, our race, color or nationality. "He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. There is no god but He, The Exalted in Might, The Wise." (Holy Quran chapter 3:6) Allah knows all of this before our birth even, but we still continue our journey to fulfill our destiny.
SIRAAT, HOW IT LOOKS LIKE:
Narrated by Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: We, the companions of the Prophet said,
"O Allah's Apostle! What is the bridge?' He said, "It is a slippery (bridge) on which there are clamps and (Hooks like) a thorny seed that is wide at one side and narrow at the other and has thorns with bent ends. Such a thorny seed is found in Najd and is called As-Sa'dan. Some of the believers will cross the bridge as quickly as the wink of an eye, some others as quick as lightning, a strong wind, fast horses or she-camels. So some will be safe without any harm; some will be safe after receiving some scratches, and some will fall down into Hell. The last person will cross by being dragged over the bridge." (Sahih Bukhari- Volume 9, Book 93, Number 532)
WHO WILL BE THE FIRST TO CROSS IT?
Prophet (PBUH)) said, The Sirat Bridge will be set over Hell. The first prophet who will cross it with his nation will be I. [Bukhari].
Then a bridge will be laid over the (Hell) Fire." Allah's Apostle added, "I will be the first to cross it. And the invocation of the Apostles on that Day, will be 'Allahukka Sallim, Sallim (O Allah, save us, save us!),' and over that bridge there will be hooks Similar to the thorns of As Sa'dan (a thorny tree). Didn't you see the thorns of As-Sa'dan?" The companions said, "Yes, O Allah's Apostle." He added, "So the hooks over that bridge will be like the thorns of As-Sa-dan except that their greatness in size is only known to Allah. These hooks will snatch the people according to their deeds. Some people will be ruined because of their evil deeds, and some will be CUT INTO PIECES AND FALL DOWN IN HELL, but will be saved afterwards, when Allah has finished the judgments among His slaves, and intends to take out of the Fire whoever He wishes to take out from among those who used to testify that none had the right to be worshipped but Allah.” (Sahi Bukhari- Volume 8, Book 76, Number 577).
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:"...As-Sirat (a bridge) will be laid across Hell and I (Muhammad) shall be the first amongst the Apostles to cross it with my followers. Nobody except the Apostles will then be able to speak and they will be saying then, 'O Allah! Save us. O Allah Save us.'..." -Sahih Bukhari 1:770.

STAGES OF CROSSING THE BRIDGE OF SIRAAT ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT. There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell): this is with your Lord; a Decree which must be accomplished. In popular Muslim thought, the belief in 'As-Sirat' the bridge of the way, the bridge over hell) is often cited as compulsory.

The 'As Sirat' is understood to be an extremely narrow (almost the width of a hair follicle) and sharp bridge with hooks, clasps and thorny iron that all souls (including the righteous / believers) will encounter on the Day of Resurrection. It is understood to be surrounded by the raging fire of Hell and one would need to cross this bridge in order to reach paradise or a state of felicity.

IT TAKES 15,000 YEARS TO CROSS THE BRIDGE OF SIRAAT

May Allah have His mercy upon us? The journey of the bridge of Siraat is extremely long.

Sayyiduna Fuzail bin Iyaad narrates that the journey of the bridge of Siraat is 15,000 years long (meaning the distance a fast horse covers in 15,000 years). 5,000 years will be of going up, 5,000 years of going down and 5,000 years of going straight. The bridge of Siraat is thinner than a strand of hair, sharper than the edge of the sword and has been placed upon the back of Hell. The person who is weak and anxious due to the fear of Allah will succeed in crossing the bridge of Siraat[1].

THE FEAR OF THE BRIDGE OF SIRAT

Although Satan will try his best to prevent you from reading this book making you feel lazy, try and read it from beginning to end, you will feel a transformation in yourself.

Virtues of Durūd Sharīf the Holy Prophet said, “Recitation of Durūd Sharīf upon me is Noor for you on the bridge of Siraat[2].”

The sinful will allegedly fall into its raging fire whilst those who remained righteous, will make their way swiftly across this bridge at a pace directly proportional to the good deeds that they would have earned during their earthly abode. The first one to cross the bridge is understood to be Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Our Negligence! Indeed, the matter of the bridge of Siraat is very critical and severe. It is finer than even a strand of hair, sharper than even the edge of a sword and is placed above the Hellfire. By Allah! Crossing bridge of Siraat will be very

Crucial and alarming matter which everyone will have to confront.

EVERYONE WILL PASS THE BRIDGE OF SIRAAT

It is narrated by Sayyidatuna Hafsa that the Holy Prophet said, “I hope those who were present

The Fear of the Bridge of Siraat in the battles of Badr and Hudaibiyah will not enter the fire.” She asked humbly “Ya Rasūl-Allah, has Allah not mentioned in the Holy Qur’an: There is not one of you who may not pass over Hell. This is necessarily a decided thing for your Lord.”(Surah Maryam, Verse 71). He replied, “Have you not heard that Allah said, Then We shall save the God fearing; and will leave the unjust in it falling on their knees.” (Surah Maryam, Verse 72)[3]

THE EVILDOERS WILL FALL INTO THE HELLFIRE

The foregoing narration clearly states that everyone will have to pass over the Hellfire. The believers, who possess the fear of Allah, will be saved and protected.

The Fear of the Bridge of Siraat whereas the culprits and unrighteous people will fall into Hell! It will be a very difficult situation but still we do not wake from the sleep of negligence and heedlessness.

There is not one of you who may not pass over Hell) and I am not aware whether I will be saved or not[4].”

THE HORRIFIC SITUATION AT THE TIME OF CROSSING THE BRIDGE OF SIRAAT

Dear Islamic Brothers! Just imagine! What will be our condition when the sun, just one and a quarter mile away from the ground, will be showering fire (fierce heat) on the Day of Judgment? People will be naked and barefooted upon the intensely hot ground of copper. Just imagine; when the brains of people will be boiling in extreme heat. Internal organs such as the liver will have burst, the hearts of people will have come to the throat from chest due to immense grief, terror and panic and everyone will have to pass the bridge of Siraat in this state of unimaginable fear and trouble.

In order to cross the bridge of Siraat, one does not need expertise in different sports and arts such as boxing, wrestling, running, gliding and space-travelling as these things will not benefit any one on the bridge of Siraat; instead, the fear of Allah will benefit people as Sayyidunā Fuzail bin Iyaad said, “The people who are weak and anxious due to the fear of Allah will easily cross the bridge of Siraat.”

VARIOUS WAYS OF CROSSING THE BRIDGE OF SIRAAT

Sayyidatuna Aisha Siddiqa narrated “My beloved husband said, ‘There is a bridge over Hell which is finer than a strand of hair and sharper than the edge of a sword. Upon it, there are hooks and thorns made of iron which catches hold of those people whom Allah wills. The people will cross the bridge of Siraat in different ways. Some will cross it (very swiftly) like the blink of an eye, some like lightening, some like the wind, some like fast horse and camel riders. The Angels will be reciting ‘’ (Oh my Rab, let him pass safely, Oh my Rab, let him pass safely). Some Muslims will be saved, some will be injured and some will fall into the fire of Hell on their faces’[5]

ONE REASON FOR DISTRESS IN THE HEREAFTER

The colour of Hellfire will be quite black and the bridge of Siraat will be in total darkness. Only the one whom Allah will mercy will be successful, as it is narrated by Sayyidunā Sahl bin Abdullah Tustari, “The one confronting deprivation and poverty in the world shall be at ease and peace in the hereafter and the one who is affluent and wealthy in the world shall face deprivation in the hereafter[6].”

Sayyidunā Sa’eed bin Abi Hilal said, “I have heard that the bridge of Siraat will be like a strand of hair for some people on the Day of Judgment while it will be like home and wide valleys for some others[7].”

MORE WEALTH, MORE BURDEN

It’s the way of the world that the more wealth a person has, the more burden he will have. We can take the example of travelling; the passengers, who have the most belongings, face the most difficulties. Further, those who travel abroad may well be aware of the fact that the passengers who have luggage in large amount face a lot of trouble and difficulty at customs. Similarly, those people who possess the least amount of worldly wealth will be at peace and ease in the afterlife.

Sayyidunā Anas said that the beloved of Allah came holding the hand of Abu Zar and asked, “Oh Abu Zar! Do you know we have a difficult valley ahead of us? And only those having a light burden will successfully pass it” Another person askedYa Rasūl-Allah! Am I from those who have heavy burden or from those who have light burden?” The Holy Prophet asked, “Do you have sustenance for today?” He said 'Yes'. The Holy Prophet then asked, “Do you have sustenance for tomorrow?” He again said yes. The Holy Prophet then asked, “Do you have sustenance for the day after tomorrow?” He replied ‘No’. The beloved Rasūl of Allah said “

If you had possessed sustenance for three days, you would have been amongst those (people) who have heavy burden[8].

THE MUSLIMS WITH NOOR

The Muslims whom Allah will mercy will be given such Noor  (light) whereby they will succeed on the day of judgment. Hence, Allah says in His glorious Qur’an, Para 27, Surah Hadeed, verse 12: The day when you will see the believing men and believing women that their light runs before them and on their right.

THE GLORY OF THE LIGHT OF IMAAN

The fortunate Muslims whom Allah will mercy will be crossing the bridge of Siraat joyfully swaying with their bright and sparkling faces due to the light of their faith. Therefore, the Merciful Prophet said, “Hellfire will say to the Mo’min (true believer), ‘Oh Mo’min! Pass quickly, because your light has extinguished my fire’[9].”

FIVE NOOR-PROVIDING SAYINGS OF THE HOLY PROPHET

Read 5 blessed sayings of The Holy Prophet with regard to the virtuous deeds whereby a believer can get Noor on the Day of Judgment:

(1) Punishment for the One who misses his Fard Salah

The Salah will be Noor (light), Burhan (proof) and salvation on the day of judgment for the one who protects it while there will neither be any Noor and Burhan nor any salvation for the one who does not protect salah, and such a person will be resurrected with Qaroon, Fir’oun, Hamaan, and Ubay bin Khalaf (the leader of the hypocrites) on the Day of Judgment[10]

(2) The Excellence of Going to the Masjid in Darkness

Give the good news of Noor-e-Taam (complete Noor) on the Day of Judgment to those people who go to the Masajid in darkness[11].

(3) The Excellence of Removing Difficulty

Allah will make two types of Noor on the bridge of Siraat on the Day of Judgment for the one who removes a Muslim brother's difficulty. Their light will illuminate the universe and Allah knows the exact number[12].

(4) The Excellence of Kalima

Whoever recites‘’Laa ilaha illa Allahu’’100 times, Allah will resurrect him on the Day of Judgment in such a state that his face will be shining as the moon shines on the 14th night[13].

 (5) The Excellence of Zikr in the Market

Whoever does the Zikr of Allah in the market, he will be given Noor on the Day of Judgment for his every single hair[14].

PEOPLE DEPRIVED OF NOOR

The unfortunate people who do not offer Salah, disobey and distress their parents, prevent their children from following Shariah so that they become modern and trendy, do not prevent their wife and adult daughters from immodesty, do not refrain from films & dramas, songs & musical instruments, unlawful occupations, interest-based businesses, adulteration, deception & betrayal, dirty language, backbiting, tales-telling, fault-finding, immorality & misbehavior, offending or harming Muslims without a lawful reason or do not refrain from the company of indecent & rude people who miss Salah and adopt fashion or the people who look at attractive young boys with lust. There is a matter of concern for all of such people. If Allah and His beloved become displeased, Imaan is ruined because of sins, surely they will have to face everlasting unbearable punishments and they will not get any Noor on the bridge of Siraat.

DID NOT LAUGH FOR 40 YEARS

Sayyidunā Hasan Basri, over-taken by fear, desired to be the person who will eventually be released from Hellfire after one thousand years. Alas! One thousand years is an extremely long period. By Allah! It is impossible to bear the punishment of Hellfire even for a millionth of a second! Imagine! How fearful Sayyidunā Hasan Basri was. It has been stated that he did not laugh for 40 years. He often seemed as frightened as the prisoner who has been sentenced to be executed in a short while. Whenever he used to talk, it seemed as though he is describing the situation of the afterlife by watching with his own eyes. When he remained silent, it seemed as if fire was burning in his eyes. He was asked, “Why do you remain so sorrowful and terror stricken?” He replied,” I fear that if Allah becomes displeased with me due to some of my misdeeds and says, go away, I will not forgive you, then what will happen to me[15]!

THE ONE WHO CROSSES WITH DIFFICULTY

Sayyiduna Imaam Muhammad Ghazali says, “On the Day of Judgement, Allah will gather all the people from the past and the present at a particular place. The Day of Judgement will last for 50,000 years, during that time, everyone will look towards the sky for 40 years. They will be waiting anxiously for the decision. Believers will be given Noor according to their deeds. The Noor of some believers will be equal to the size of a mountain and that of some others will be equal to the size of a date tree and some will receive even lesser Noor.

There will be a believer who will be given Noor equivalent to the size of a big toe, which will sometimes brighten and sometimes will diminish and fade away. When it diminishes, the believer will stand still because it will be too dark for him to continue walking and he will walk when it brightens.

Everyone will be crossing the bridge of Siraat according to their Noor. Some will be crossing the bridge of Siraat like the blink of an eye, some will be crossing like lightening, some like the clouds, some like a shooting star, some like running horses and some like running men. The one who will be given Noor

equivalent to the size of a big toe will be crossing the bridge on his hands, feet and face. When he will move one of his hands along, the other will be stuck behind and when he will struggle to move one foot, he will forcefully drag the other one along with him and the fire will reach his sides. This person will,

however, manage to cross the bridge of Siraat successfully. After facing great difficulties & hardships, this believer will stand up and praise Allah. He will then be given ghusl besides a well near the door of the Heaven[16].”

FEAR OF THE FOOL

Remember! The fear the stupid people possess is worse even than the temporary fear of a sensitive woman because when these people listen to the horrifying and terrifying conditions of the Judgement Day, they insincerely start saying, “Allah forbid, Allah forbid. Oh Allah! Save me. Oh Allah! Bestow your mercy upon me. Oh Allah! Help me.”

These feelings and emotions are confined to only that particular moment and are not from the bottom of the heart. The reason why their emotions and fears are being called temporary is that although they express fear, they continue to commit sins instead of leaving them. (For example, the person who misses Salah continues to miss it, a beardless person does not grow beard; a liar does not stop lying, the person in the habit of taking and giving bribery, unlawful occupation, fraud & deception does not give up these evils, the person who looks at strange women and beardless boys with lust does not safeguard

his eyes from looking at them, the person who watches film and enjoys listening to music does not develop a mindset to The Fear of the Bridge of Siraat refrain from sins, the people who wear un-Islamic dress, or oppress and cause grief to other people do not avoid these sins, adulterers, alcohol drinkers, disobedient to parents, the one who does not educate their children about the Sunnah and the one who enjoys the company of modern and corrupt friends and the people who miss their Salah, do not repent and do not give up the sins. Instead, all of them remain steadfast upon committing sins.

WHO DOES SATAN LAUGH AT?

Satan laughs at those people who cry and seek forgiveness just temporarily or because other people are also doing the same. He is like the person who is in a jungle and is sitting outside a strongly constructed and well protected house. Suddenly, he hears a lion roaring from a distance, the lion approaches to attack him. Instead of taking refuge in the house, he begins to weep and say, “I seek the protection of this house from the lion”. If this person keeps staying there and does not run into the house, do you think his pathetic cries will save him from the lion? Never. Unless he does not make an effort to move and take refuge of the house, he will not be safe from the lion. By keeping this example in mind, decide for yourself as to how temporary fear and emotion will benefit you[17].

GIVE UP SINS IMMEDIATELY INSTEAD OF SLOWLY

If you become emotional and start crying sincerely, even if it is just for a moment, you will gain benefit. It will cause a positive change.

Develop the mindset that ‘I will try my best to improve myself’. Repent and cry with remorse remembering your sins. Make a firm intention that 'from now on' I will never commit any sin ’. Beware! Satan will try his best to prevent you from your reformation by giving his satanic ideas such as, it’s not

Good to make a quick and instant decision, you should rectify yourself gradually. Dear Islamic Brothers! By Allah! This is a very dangerous attack of Satan. It is extremely dangerous to delay in repentance. Satan might whisper, “I am not preventing you from repenting, you can repent right now”.

THREE CONDITIONS OF REPENTANCE

Repentance does not mean just uttering the word 'repentance' a couple of times. Please remember the following three conditions of repentance. If even one condition is not fulfilled, your repentance will not be accepted. The three conditions are: (1) Confession of sin, (2) Feeling guilty, (3) Firm intention to give up the Sin.

THE BRIDGE OF AS-SIRAT - "SLAUGHTER DEATH."

Before the command was issued for all people to cross over as-Sirat, a caller said, "Bring death." A black animal that was similar to a ram was brought. The caller said loudly, "Slaughter death."

The angels stroke death with their wings that were similar to lightning, Death started to die and then it completely vanished. The caller said, "Now it is a new and everlasting life where you will find no death at all." The command was issued for people to cross. The believers rushed onto the bridge whereas the unbelievers moved backwards. Masrur drew back with the unbelievers, wearing a garment of tar. He did not know how he came to wear this garment. All he knew was that the final words about death struck his soul and preoccupied his mind with horror.

Masrur asked himself, "What does slaughtering death mean?" Actually his final and only hope was to die. He hoped to die when the Day of Judgment started and when its great events took place. He hoped to die when the angels began to judge him and when he stood before Allah, the Almighty, behind the veil of fear. However, unfortunately, he did not die. Death was his final refuge; by its destruction his hopes vanished forever.

Maqrur looked at as-Sirat and he saw flames and blazes coming out from beneath it like a hungry monster that opens its mouth to swallow a long -awaited prey. The Hell-fire was almost bursting with fury and its blaze was trembling out of fear of Allah's torment if it did not perform its duty.

Maqrur talked to himself saying, "If the Hell-fire is trembling out of fear of Allah then what about us!" Masrur contemplated as-Sirat. It was very long without end. Its width appeared to be that of a hair. The angels started to push him forwards to cross it.

An angel said to him, "You are in a very distinguished group. You are with Pharaoh, Qarun and Haman. Are you not the great master? Was it not your title in the worldly life? Damn you all, how did you dare to defy Allah, the Almighty?!"
Allah Knows best. May Allah protect us From Misguidance.
