DATED 9TH JULY 2017 CE AND 14TH SHAWWAL 1438 AH
Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu
Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu.
Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with
Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah
guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one
can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness
that Muhammad (Sallalhu alaihi Wasalam) is His slave and Messenger.
1.0 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR
SALVATION
Holy quran chapter 5:69 ‘’Surely, those who believe, those who are
Jewish, the converts, and the Christians; any of them who (1) believe in
God and (2) believe in the Last Day, and (3) lead a
righteous life, have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.
Holy
Quran Chapter 2:62, and Holy Quran Chapter 5:69
Surely,
those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts;
anyone who
believes
in God, and believes in the Last Day, and
leads
a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have
nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ

[Final
Testament/ Holy Quran Chapter 17:36]
"You
shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have
given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for
using them."
2.0 ALLAH SAYS ALL MESSENGERS
MUST BE RIDICULED
Holy
quran chapter 13:32Messengers before you have been ridiculed; I permitted the
disbelievers to carry on, then I punished them. How terrible was My
retribution!
Holy
Quran chapter 13:33Is there any equal to the One who controls every single
soul? Yet, they set up idols to rival God. Say, "Name them. Are you informing
Him of something on earth that He does not know? Or, are you fabricating empty
statements?" Indeed, the schemes of those who disbelieve have been adorned
in their eyes. They are thus diverted from the right path. Whomever God sends
astray can never find a guiding teacher.
Holy
Quran chapter 13:34They have incurred retribution in this life, and the
retribution in the Hereafter is far worse. Nothing can protect them against
God.
لَهُم عَذابٌ
فِى الحَيوٰةِ الدُّنيا وَلَعَذابُ الـٔاخِرَةِ أَشَقُّ وَما لَهُم مِنَ اللَّهِ

3.0 WHAT ACTIONS AND WORDS ARE REGARDED
AS MOCKING RELIGION
3.1 MOCKING RELIGION IS A MAJOR SIN:
Mocking religion
is a major sin and is transgressing the sacred limits of Allah, and is one of
the areas of disbelief that many of the ignorant and base people fall into
without realising. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the
meaning):
“The hypocrites
fear lest a Soorah (chapter of the Qur’an) should be revealed about them,
showing them what is in their hearts. Say: ‘(Go ahead and) mock! But certainly
Allah will bring to light all that you fear. ’If you ask them (about this),
they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at Allah,
and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and
His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that you were
mocking?’ Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We
pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were
Mujrimoon (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)”[ Holy Quran
chapter at-Tawbah 9:64-66].
Imam Ibn Hazm
az-Zaahiri said: It is proven by sound texts that anyone who mocks Allah, may
He be exalted, or any of the angels or Prophets (peace be upon them), or any
verse of the Qur’an, or any of the obligatory duties of religion after proof
has reached him, is a disbeliever. End quote from al-Fasl fi’l-Milal wa’l-Ahwa’
wa’n-Nihal
Shaykh Sulaymaan
Aal ash-Shaykh said: Whoever mocks Allah, His Book, His Messenger or His
Religion becomes a disbeliever, even if he did not really intend to mock them,
according to scholarly consensus. End quote from Tayseer al-‘Azeez al-Hameed
(p. 617)
3.2 RIDICULING AND BELITTLING THE RELIGION:
Mocking the
religion includes all words and deeds that are indicative of casting aspersions
upon, ridiculing and belittling the religion. Abu Haamid al-Ghazaali said:
What is meant by
mockery is ridiculing, belittling, and pointing out faults and defects by way
of laughing at something, and that may be done by in word and deed, or by
pointing and gesturing.End quote from Ihya’ ‘Uloom ad-Deen (3/131).
Any word or deed
that is indicative – according to what is customary among people and what they
understand in their language – of belittling or ridiculing Allah and His
Messenger, or the Qur’an and Sunnah, or any of the symbols of this religion,
comes under the heading of mockery that puts one beyond the pale of Islam.
Shaykh al-Islam
Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in as-Saarim al-Maslool (541):
As there is no set
definition of reviling in either linguistic or Islamic terms, reference
concerning that should be made to what is customary among people. Whatever is
customarily regarded as reviling of the Prophet is that to which we must apply
the words of the Sahaabah and scholars. Whatever is not like that is not
subject to those rulings. End quote.
3.3 WORDS OR DEEDS ARE NOT INDICATIVE OF
RIDICULE:
If the words or
deeds are not indicative of ridicule, belittling and scorn, then they do not
come under the heading of mockery that puts one beyond the pale of Islam.
Mockery may come
under the heading of sin rather than disbelief, such as mocking a Muslim person
for what he is. But if someone mocks him for his religious commitment or for his
appearance that is in accordance with the Sunnah, then this is a serious matter
which in some cases may constitute disbelief – Allah forbid.
3.4 LEAVE THE PLACE WHERE ALLAH IS REDICULED:
What the Muslim
must do, if he hears or sees any kind of mockery of religion, is to sternly
denounce the one who says or does that, and if he does not respond then he must
leave the place where he is. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of
the meaning):
“And it has
already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur’an) that when you hear the
Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they
engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in
that case you would be like them. Surely, Allah will collect the hypocrites and
disbelievers all together in Hell”[ Holy Quran chapter an-Nisa’ 4:140].
With regard to
smiling or laughing when hearing such words, that makes the one who does it a
partner in sin with the one who says them, if it stems from his being pleased
with and accepting those things, as Allah, may He be exalted, says: “certainly
in that case you would be like them” [Holy Quran chapter an-Nisa’ 4:140]. But
if it did not stem from his being pleased with and accepting those things, then
it is a major sin which indicates that reverence for Allah and His symbols is
not firmly established in his heart.
What the Muslim
must do is honour the symbols of Allah’s religion and the revelations of Allah,
and venerate them and hold them in the highest esteem, as Allah, may He be
exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “And whosoever honours the
Symbols of Allah, then it is truly from the piety of the heart”[ Holy Quran
chapter al-Hajj 22:32].
Al-‘Allaamah
as-Sa‘di said: The basis of religion is founded upon reverence for Allah and
honouring of His religion and His Messengers. Mocking any of these things is
contrary to that basic principle and is diametrically opposed to it . End quote
from Tayseer al-Kareem ar-Rahmaan (p. 342)
4.0 MAKING FUN OF ISLAM
4.1 MOCKING CONSTITUTES KUFR (DISBELIEF):
Undoubtedly
mocking and making fun of something that is known to be part of Islam
constitutes kufr (disbelief) that puts one beyond the pale of Islam, even if
the one who does that does not mean anything more than joking, because this in
and of itself is an action that puts one beyond the pale of Islam as Allah, may
He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“If you ask them
(about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was
it at Allah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs,
revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)
that you were mocking? Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had
believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because
they were Mujrimoon (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)”[
Holy Quran chapter at-Tawbah 9:65-66].
What the one who
is present in such a gathering must do is denounce that. If he cannot do that,
then he must leave the gathering, so that he will not be a partner in the sin.
If he expresses any kind of approval of their actions and words, then he is
like them. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when you
(Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)) see those who engage in a
false conversation about Our Verses (of the Quran) by mocking at them, stay
away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitan (Satan) causes
you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those
people who are the Zalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.)”[ Holy Quran
chapter al-An‘aam 6:68]
“And it has
already been revealed to you in the Book (this Quran) that when you hear the
Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they
engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in
that case you would be like them. Surely, Allah will collect the hypocrites and
disbelievers all together in Hell”[ Holy Quran chapter an-Nisa’ 4:140].
Allah, may He be
glorified and exalted, regards the one who sits in a gathering and witnesses
evil, if he does not denounce it, as being like the one who does or speaks that
evil.
Hence it is said
that the one who listens is the partner of the one who backbites. According to
a report, the one who witnesses sin but hates it is like the one who was absent
from it, and the one who was absent from it but approves of it is like the one
who witnessed it.
Shaykh al-Islam
ibn Taymiyah said:
When some of them
made fun of (the believers) and said concerning those with whom Allah is
pleased, “We have never seen anyone like our people who are well-versed in the
Qur’an when it comes to eating more or telling more lies or being more cowardly
when meeting the enemy,” Allah revealed the words (interpretation of the
meaning):
“The hypocrites
fear lest a Soorah (chapter of the Quran) should be revealed about them,
showing them what is in their hearts. Say: "(Go ahead and) mock! But
certainly Allah will bring to light all that you fear.’If you ask them (about
this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at
Allah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations,
etc.) and His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) that you were
mocking?Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We
pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were
Mujrimoon (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)”[ Holy Quran
chapter al-Munaafiqoon 9:64].
Allah informed
them that they had disbelieved after having believed, even though they said,
“We say words of disbelief without believing in them; rather we were just
talking idly and joking.” He explained that mocking the revelations of Allah
constitutes kufr, and such words cannot be uttered except by someone who is
content with such words, for if he had faith in his heart, it would have
prevented him from saying such words. End quote from al-Eemaan (2/284)
4.2 MAKING FUN OF ANY ASPECT OF ISLAM:
Undoubtedly making
fun of any aspect of Islam is contrary to respect and veneration for this
religion, especially with regard to matters such as the punishment on the Day
of Resurrection, or in the grave, or the terrors of the resurrection. Islam has
only told us of these things so as to alarm people and set their hearts
straight, so that they will not persist in heedlessness. One of the greatest
forms of heedlessness, which is indicative of being overwhelmed by ignorance,
whims and desires, and lack of insight, is when one regards matters of
exhortation and admonition as a joke and something to be laughed at and made
fun of.
Shaykh al-Islam
Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning these hypocrites who
make fun of Islam:
This indicates
that they did not themselves think that they had committed an act of kufr;
rather they thought that that did not constitute kufr. So Allah explained that
ridiculing Allah and His revelations and His Messenger constituted kufr and
meant that the person had disbelieved after having believed. This indicates
that they had faith, albeit weak, and they did this haraam action knowing that
it was haraam, but they did not think that it constituted kufr. However it was
kufr by means of which they became disbelievers, although they did not think
that it was permissible. End quote from Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa (7/273)
The one who falls
into such error must renew his faith by uttering the Shahaadatayn (twin
declaration of faith) and repent sincerely from what he has done. As for the
Shahaadatayn, uttering it in the prayer or in the rituals of ‘Umrah is
sufficient. It says in Kashshaaf al-Qinaa‘ (6/181):
If the disbeliever
prays or gives the adhaan (call to prayer), he is deemed to be a Muslim,
regardless of whether he was originally a disbeliever or had apostatised. End
quote.
5.0 DEALLING WITH WORK COLLEAGUE WHO
REVILES ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER?
5.1 STAY AWAY FROM THOSE MOCKING TILL THEY
TURN TO ANOTHER TOPIC:
What the Muslim
must do is avoid being present in any gathering in which Allah is being
disobeyed, so how about a gathering in which Allah and His Messenger are being
reviled?
Allah, may He be
glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when you
(Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)) see those who engage in a
false conversation about Our Verses (of the Quran) by mocking at them, stay
away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitan (Satan) causes
you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those
people who are the Zalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.)”[ Holy Quran
chapter al-An‘aam 6:68].
If anyone finds
himself in a gathering in which people cast aspersions on the verses of Allah,
or mock them, or show disrespect towards them, or revile them, then he must
leave their gathering until they begin to speak of something other than the
falsehood in which they were indulging.
Allah, may He be glorified
and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And it has
already been revealed to you in the Book (this Quran) that when you hear the
Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they
engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in
that case you would be like them. Surely, Allah will collect the hypocrites and
disbelievers all together in Hell”[ Holy Quran chapter an-Nisa’ 4:140].
Al-Qurtubi said:
Anyone who sits in
a sinful gathering and does not object to them will bear an equal burden of sin
with them. They should be denounced if they speak sinful words or do sinful
actions. If he is not able to denounce them, then he should get up and leave so
that he will not be one of those included in this verse.End quote from
al-Jaami‘ li Ahkaam al-Qur’an (5/418)
Based on that,
what you must do is denounce this evildoer; if you are not able to do that then
you must leave this gathering. If that is not possible, then in that case you
must stop working in this place, so long as you can hear someone reviling Allah
and His Messenger and you are not able to denounce it or leave that gathering.
Shaykh ‘Abd
ar-Rahmaan as-Sa‘di said: This prohibition applies to the one who sits with
them and does not feel the fear of Allah when he joins them in haraam words
deeds or keeps quiet and not denounce them. If he does fear Allah, may He be
exalted, by telling them to do what is good and forbids them to do evil or to
say these words that they are uttering, and that results in removal or
reduction of the evil, then there will be no blame or sin on him. End quote
from Tayseer al-Kareem ar-Rahmaan (1/260)
5.2 STAND UP FOR ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER:
The best way to
stand up for Allah and His Messenger in this situation is by doing several
things:
5.2.1 Denouncing
him for what he says and being harsh towards him in that regard; explaining the
seriousness of what he is saying and the stern warning against reviling Allah
and His Messenger; and advising the people around him not to listen to him
because of the seriousness of what he is saying.
The one who
reviles Allah and His Messenger is an apostate from the religion of Islam; all
his good deeds are rendered invalid, his marriage contract is annulled and his
Muslim wife becomes haraam to him. If he dies in that state without having
repented, then he is not to be washed or shrouded, the funeral prayer is not to
be offered for him, and he is not to be buried in the Muslim graveyard.
Similarly, he cannot inherit or be inherited from, and his fate in the
Hereafter is to abide forever and eternally in the fire of Hell.
5.2.2 Ongoing
shunning and severing of ties with him, if he does not repent from the
disbelief and misguidance that he is following, as Allah, may He be exalted,
says concerning Ibraaheem (peace be upon him):
“Indeed there has
been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him, when
they said to their people: "Verily, we are free from you and whatever you
worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us
and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allah Alone…”[
Holy Quran chapter al-Mumtahinah 60:4].
Shaykh ‘Abd
ar-Rahmaan al-Barraak said:
The least that
must be done, in addition to denouncing him verbally and highlighting the fact
that this is apostasy, is to cut off ties with him and not sit with him. If a
person is faced with having to deal with him in the workplace, then he must
shun him and turn away from him; so he should not greet him or interact with
him in any friendly manner, and he should not speak to him any word that is
indicative of lenience, so that he will feel the true nature of his crime and
the abhorrent nature of what he has been saying.End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa
al-‘Allaamah al-Barraak (1/8)
You have to advise
the boss that if he is a Muslim and truly loves Allah and His Messenger, then
he must be angry for their sake and stand up for them. The least he should do
is to advise this evildoer, and if he does not refrain from his disbelief then
the least that he can do is to dismiss him from his job; he cannot let love of
work and worldly gain take precedence over love of Allah and His Messenger.
Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say: If your
fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that
you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in
which you delight are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger, and striving
hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allah brings about His Decision
(torment). And Allah guides not the people who are Al-Fasiqoon (the rebellious,
disobedient to Allah)” [Holy Quran chapter at-Tawbah 9:24].
Whoever gives up
something for the sake of Allah, Allah will compensate him with something
better than it. So it is certain that if the boss dismisses this evildoer from
his job, Allah, may He be exalted, will compensate him with something better
than him, and his business will not incur loss because of that.
6.0 ISLAMIC PROPAGATION.
Da‘wah usually denotes the preaching of Islam. Da‘wah
literally means “issuing a summons” or “making an invitation”. A Muslim who
practices da‘wah, either as a religious worker or in a volunteer community
effort, is called person who invites people to understand Islam through a
dialogical process, and may be categorized in some cases as the Islamic
equivalent of a missionary, as one who invites people to the faith, to the
prayer, or to Islamic life. Da’wah or
Call towards Allah, is the means by which the Prophet Muhammad
(pbuh) spread the message of the Qur’ān to mankind. After the Prophet, his
followers or Ummah assume the responsibility of the Dawah to the people of
their times.
Having gone through above challenges one might understand
that as a Dawah or Nasiha or preacher on The Religion of Truth, Dawah Training
Program, Enjoining Good - Forbidding Evil, Islam the Misunderstood Religion to non-Muslims,
For People Who Think, O Callers to Islam; you are bound to have ridiculing and
mocking of all your efforts. Have full patience as all prophets and Messengers
of Allah went through them.
7.0 REPENTANCE ON RIDICULING AND
MOCKING ISLAM
With regard to
repentance from rediculing and mocking, it is essential to repent sincerely and
specifically from that great evil.
Shaykh Ibn
‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Whoever speaks a word of kufr,
even in jest, has disbelieved. He must repent and must believe that he is
repenting from apostasy. So he must renew his Islam, for the revelations of Allah,
May He be glorified and exalted, and His Messenger, are too great to be mocked
or ridiculed. End quote from Liqaa’aat al-Baab al-Maftooh (60/12)
And Allah knows best.
