70 MAJOR SINS –(AL-KABA'R) IN ISLAM

Assembled by Mallam Abba Abana. Issued and dated 25 February 2021

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu. Amma Ba’d.

Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad () is His slave and Messenger.

Major Sins Definition:

Major sins are defined as what is forbidden by Allah and His Messenger in the Qur'an and the Sunnah in addition to what is narrated on the authority of early Muslims. Allah, the Most high, promises whoever avoids the major sins to expiate his minor sins.

Allah, the Almighty says, {If ye (but) eschew the most heinous of the things which ye are forbidden to do, we shall remit your evil deeds, and admit you to a gate of great honour.} (Holy Quran Chapter An-Nisaa:31)

In this text, Allah, the Most High, also promises whoever avoids the major sins to admit him to Paradise. Allah, the Almighty says, {Those who avoid the greater sins and indecencies, and when they are angry even they forgive;} (Holy Quran Chapter Ash-Shura:37)

The Qur'an also states, {Those who avoid great sins and indecent deeds, save lesser offences, verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness.} (Holy Quran Chapter An-Najm:32).

The Prophet () said, "The five prescribed Prayers, and from one Friday Prayer to another and from Ramadan to another entail forgiveness for what is between them as long as you do not commit the major sins.” [Reported by Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaymah and Ahmed.]

We are obliged to learn about what the major sins are, so that Muslims may avoid them. Scholars of Sacred knowledge are of different opinions about the number of the major sins. It is argued that they are only seven owing to the Prophet's () saying, "Avoid the seven heinous sins: Worshipping others with Allah, sorcery, taking a life which Allah has made sacred except in the course of justice, devouring usury, appropriating the property of the orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, and charging believing women, unmindful though innocent, with adultery.”  Ibn Abbas holds that they are likely counted as seventy not seven. That is a good point of view because enumeration is not intended in the Hadith. As a matter of fact, any sin entailing either a threat of punishment in the Hereafter explicitly mentioned by the Qur'an or Hadith, a prescribed legal penalty (Hadd), or being accursed by Allah or His Messenger () is called a major sin. We have to bear in mind that some major sins are most heinous than another. This is because the Prophet () has enlisted Shirk (worshipping others with Allah) though a polytheist will suffer eternal torture in Fire and will never be forgiven. Allah, the Almighty, says, {Allah forgiveth not (the sin of) joining other gods with Him, but He forgiveth whom He pleaseth other sins than.} (Holy Quran Chapter An-Nisa:116)

1.0 SUMMARISED 70 MAJOR SINS –(AL-KABA'R) IN ISLAM

1.1. MAJOR SINS –(AL-KABA'R)- (keep off & repent).

The major sins are those acts which have been forbidden by Allah in the Quran and by His Messenger () in the Sunnah (practise of the Prophet), and which have been made clear by the actions of of the first righteous generation of Muslims, the Companions of the Prophet ().

Allah Most High says in His Glorious Book:

إِن تَجۡتَنِبُواْ ڪَبَآٮِٕرَ مَا تُنۡہَوۡنَ عَنۡهُ نُكَفِّرۡ عَنكُمۡ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمۡ وَنُدۡخِلۡڪُم مُّدۡخَلاً۬ كَرِيمً۬ا (٣١)

If you avoid the major (part) of what you have been forbidden (to do), We will cancel out for you your (other) evil deeds and will admit you (to Paradise) with a noble entry. (Holy Quran Chapter al-Nisa 4:31)

Thus by this verse, Allah Most High has guaranteed the Garden of Paradise to those who avoid the major sins. And Allah Most High also says:

 وَٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓٮِٕرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَٲحِشَ وَإِذَا مَا غَضِبُواْ هُمۡ يَغۡفِرُونَ (٣٧)

Those who avoid the greatest of sins and indecencies, and forgive when they are angry (Holy Quran chapter al-Shra 42:37)

Those who avoid the greatest sins and indecencies, except for oversights, (will find that) surely your Lord is ample in forgiveness. (Holy Quran chapter Al-Najm 53:32)

The Messenger of Allah () said: "The five [daily] prayers, Friday to Friday, and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happened since the previous one when major sins have been avoided." It is therefore very important to determine exactly what the greatest vices, technically called "the Major Sins" (Kaba'ir), are, in order that Muslims should avoid them.

There is some difference of opinion among scholars in this regard. Some say these major sins are seven, and in support of their position they quote the tradition: "Avoid the seven noxious things"- and after having said this, the Prophet (Sallalahu Aalaihi Wa salam) mentioned them: "associating anything with Allah; magic; killing one whom Allah has declared inviolate without a just case, consuming the property of an orphan, devouring usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers but indiscreet." (Bukhari and Muslim).

'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas said: "Seventy is closer to their number than seven," and indeed that is correct. The above tradition does not limit the major sins to those mentioned in it. Rather, it points to the type of sins which fall into the category of "major." These include those crimes which call for a prescribed punishment (HADD; plural, HUDUD), such as theft, fornication or adultery (ZINA), and murder; those prohibited acts for which a warning of a severe punishment in the Next is given in the Qur'an or the tradition; and also those deeds which are cursed by our Prophet (). These are all major sins.

Of course, there is a gradation among them, since some are more serious than others. We see that the Prophet () has included SHIRK (associating someone or something with Allah) among them, and from the text of the Qur'an we know that a person who commits SHIRK will not his sin be forgiven and will remain in Hell forever.

‘’Allah Most High says: Surely, Allah does not forgive associating anything with Him, and He forgives whatever is other than that to whomever He wills’’. (Holy Quran chapter al-Nisa 4:48)

‘’Allah forgiveth not (the sin of) joining other gods with Him: but He forgiveth whom He pleaseth other sins than this: one who joins other gods with Allah, hath strayed far, far away (from the Right)’’. ((Holy Quran chapter al-Nisa 116)

How do you ask Allah for forgiveness for sins?

Recite Astaghfirullah constantly. Repent each major sin. Say Astaghfirullah 3 times after every Salat and minimum of 100 times a day. It means, "I seek forgiveness from Allah". Allah's Messenger () said, "Whoever says, 'Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,' 100 times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea.

Can all sins be forgiven in Islam?

Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Reference Quran Chapter 39.53

Repentance is accepted for both minor and major sins such as polytheism, disbelief, and taking a life unjustly. This is because Allah (Exalted be He) states: Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief), their past will be forgiven. Allah (Exalted be He) also states: Say: "O ‘Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh: verily, Allâh forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Scholars unanimously agree that the Ayah (Qur'anic verse) mentioned above was revealed for those who repent of their sins. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: Islam wipes out all that has gone before it (previous misdeeds). And penitence also wipes out all that has gone before it.

Three conditions must be fulfilled for repentance to be accepted:

First: Giving up the sin as a form of fearing Allah and glorifying Him

Second: Resolving not to commit such sin again

Third: Feeling regret for what one had done

If the sin is oppression of another, the person's right must be returned and the sinner must ask his forgiveness. If one has backbitten another and one cannot ask a person to forgive him, one has to repent of such sin and speak well of the person whom he had previously backbitten.
