Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His
forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from
our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and
whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is
no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His
slave and Messenger.

Preamble
The fate of hypocrites on the
resurrection day [Section 1 of 2]
What does the Quran say about
hypocrisy?
When hypocrites come to you, they say: "We admitted that you truly are the Messenger of Allah." And
Allah knows that truly you are His Messenger; and Allah knows that the
hypocrites are really liars. They make their vow as a shield then they block
humans from the path of Allah.
"Verily the hypocrites are in the lowest stage of the
Fire, and never you shall find a helper for them." It is well understood from this verse that hypocrisy is the
worst kind of infidelity from the point of view of Islam, and the hypocrites
are the furthest distant people from Allah.’’
What is hypocrisy in Islam?
Hypocrisy in Islam is a serious
sickness and a great crime. It means making an outward display of Islam whilst inwardly
concealing disbelief. Hypocrisy is more dangerous than disbelief
and the punishment for it is more severe, because it is disbelief mixed with
Islam and its harmful effects are greater. Hence Allah will put the
hypocrites in the lowest level of Hell, as He says (interpretation of the
meaning):
{Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth
(grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them.} [Holy Quran Chapter Al-Nisa 4:145]
The hypocrites are always confused,
always planning deceit and plots. Although outwardly they appear to be with the
believers, inwardly they are with the disbelievers. So sometimes they are
inclined towards the believers and sometimes they are inclined towards the
disbelievers.
{(They are) swaying between this and that, belonging
neither to these nor to those; and he whom Allah sends astray, you will not
find for him a way (to the truth —
Islam)} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Nisa 4:143 –
interpretation of the meaning]
Because of the corruption of their hearts, the hypocrites are the most averse
of mankind to the religion of Allah, as Allah tells us about them
(interpretation of the meaning):
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِلَى
ٱلرَّسُولِ رَأَيۡتَ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَنكَ صُدُودً۬ا (٦١)
{And when it is said to them: ‘Come to what Allah has sent down and to the
Messenger (Muhammad),’ you (Muhammad) see the hypocrites turn away from you
(Muhammad) with aversion} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Nisa 4:61]
The
dealings of the hypocrites revolve around their own interests. When
they meet the believers, they make a show of belief and loyalty, in order to
deceive the believers and as an action of dissimulation, hoping for whatever
good and war-booty they have. But when they meet their masters and chiefs, they
say, we are with you in your shirk and Kufr. Allah says concerning them
(interpretation of the meaning):
{And when they meet those who believe, they say: “We
believe,” but when they are alone with their Shayatin (devils — polytheists,
hypocrites), they say: “Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking.
Allah mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doing to wander
blindly} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Baqarah 2:14-15]
Characteristics of the hypocrites
1. The hypocrites have many characteristics, the worst and most serious of
which is disbelief in Allah. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ ءَامِنُواْ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلنَّاسُ قَالُوٓاْ أَنُؤۡمِنُ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُۗ أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ (١٣)
{And when it is said to them (hypocrites):
‘Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad, Al-Ansar and Al-Muhajirun) have
believed,’ they say: ‘Shall we believe as the fools have believed?’ Verily,
they are the fools, but they know not} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Baqarah 2:13]
2. Among their characteristics are enmity and envy (Hasad) towards the
believers, as Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
إِن تُصِبۡكَ حَسَنَةٌ۬ تَسُؤۡهُمۡۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡكَ مُصِيبَةٌ۬ يَقُولُواْ قَدۡ
أَخَذۡنَآ أَمۡرَنَا مِن قَبۡلُ وَيَتَوَلَّواْ وَّهُمۡ
فَرِحُونَ (٥٠)
{If good befalls you (O Muhammad), it grieves them,
but if a calamity overtakes you, they say: ‘We took our precaution beforehand’
and they turn away rejoicing} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Tawbah 9:50]
3. Among their characteristics is
mockery of Allah, His Messenger and His religion. Allah says (interpretation of
the meaning):
{If you ask them (about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and
joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at Allah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses,
lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger that you were
mocking?’Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed} [Holy Quran
Chapter al-Tawbah 9:65-66]
4. Among their characteristics is that they spread corruption on earth, with
disbelief, hypocrisy and sins. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَا تُفۡسِدُواْ فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُصۡلِحُونَ (١١) أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدُونَ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا
يَشۡعُرُونَ (١٢)
{And when it is said to them: ‘Make not
mischief on the earth,’ they say: ‘We are only peacemakers. ’Verily, they are
the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not} [Holy Quran Chapter
al-Baqarah 2:11-12]
5. Among their characteristics are slander and lies. Allah tells us about them
(interpretation of the meaning):
وَيَحۡلِفُونَ
بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّہُمۡ
لَمِنڪُمۡ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٌ۬ يَفۡرَقُونَ (٥٦)
{They swear by Allah that they are truly of you while
they are not of you, but they are a people (hypocrites) who are afraid (that
you may kill them)} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Tawbah 9:56]
6.
Among their characteristics is that they enjoin what is evil and forbid
what is good, and they are stingy with their wealth. Allah says concerning them
(interpretation of the meaning):
{The hypocrites, men and women, are one
from another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism
of all kinds and all that Islam has forbidden), and forbid (people) from
Al-Ma‘ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and
they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allah’s Cause) alms]. They
have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the
Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Tawbah 9:67]
7. Among their characteristics are
greed and avarice:
{And of them are some who accuse you (O
Muhammad) in the matter of (the distribution of) the alms. If they are given
part thereof, they are pleased, but if they are not given thereof, behold! They
are enraged!} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Tawbah 9: 58 – interpretation of the
meaning]
8. Among their characteristics are those which were described by the Messenger ﷺ: “There are
four (characteristics), whoever has all of them is a complete hypocrite, and
whoever has some of them has some element of hypocrisy, unless he gives it up:
when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a treaty, he betrays it; when he makes a
promise, he breaks it; when he quarrels, he resorts to insults.” (Narrated by
Muslim, 53)
9. Among their characteristics is a concern with appearances and fancy
speech whilst they are inwardly corrupt. Allah says concerning them
(interpretation of the meaning):
{And when you look at them, their bodies
please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as blocks
of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the
enemies, so beware of them. May Allah curse them! How are they denying (or
deviating from) the Right Path?} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Munafiqun 63:4]
If the disbelievers are obvious enemies from without, then the hypocrites are
hidden enemies from within. They are more harmful and more dangerous to the
Muslims, because they mix with them and know their situation. Allah has decreed
that the ultimate destiny of the disbelievers and hypocrites will be in Hell:
{Surely, Allah will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in
Hell} [Holy Quran Chapter al-Nisa 4:140 – interpretation of the meaning]
Punishment of the hypocrites
But because of the seriousness of the harm they cause, the hypocrites will
be in the lowest level of Hell, as Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِينَ فِى ٱلدَّرۡكِ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ وَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُمۡ نَصِيرًا (١٤٥)
{Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire} [Holy
Quran Chapter al-Nisa 4:145]
Because the danger posed to the
Muslim Ummah by the disbelievers and hypocrites is so great, Allah commanded
His Messenger to strive against them:
يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ جَـٰهِدِ ٱلۡڪُفَّارَ وَٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱغۡلُظۡ
عَلَيۡہِمۡۚ وَمَأۡوَٮٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ (٩)
{O Prophet (Muhammad)! Strive hard against
the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe against them; their abode
will be Hell, and worst indeed is that destination} [Holy Quran Chapter
al-Tahrim 66:9 – interpretation of the meaning][2]
On the authority of Abu
Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The
first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of
Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and Allah will
make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will
say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I fought for you until I died
a martyr. He will say: You have lied - you did but fight that it might be said
[of you]: He is courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be
dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a
man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who used to
recite the Quran. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His
favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you
do about them? He will say: I studied [religious] knowledge and I taught it and
I recited the Quran for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but
study [religious] knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And
you recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And so
it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he
is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to
whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make
known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say:
And what did you do about them? He will say: I left no path [untrodden] in
which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake. He will
say: You have lied - you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is
open-handed. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on
his face until he is cast into Hell-fire[3].
Hadith on Sujud: Hypocrites unable to prostrate on
Judgment Day
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The
Prophet, ﷺ, said, “Our Lord will reveal His shin and every
believing man and woman will prostrate to Him, but there will remain those who
prostrated in the world for ostentation and respectability. They will try to
prostrate, but their back will be as stiff as a single bone.[4]”
The signs or indicators Hypocritical Behaviour
1. Lie
Hypocrites have the characteristics of lying, this can
be seen from Al-Qur'an surah AlMunafiqun verses 1-2;
When hypocrites come to you, they say: "We admited that you truly are
the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that truly you are His Messenger;
and Allah knows that the hypocrites are really liars. They make their vow as a
shield then they block humans from the path of Allah. Surely it is very bad
what they have done.
Ibn Kasir (2004) elaborated above verse, that if hypocrites come to you, they
say with their mouths about things that are contrary to what is in their hearts
"We admitted that you truly are the Messenger of Allah "And Allah
knows that you really are His Messenger; and Allah witnesses, that is knowing
that the hypocrites are really liars, what is in their hearts is different from
what they say.
In the context of education
area, many students do not realize that cheating when doing exam and copying
another person‘s work are considered to be an academic lying behavior.
Hence, it is important to
notice to students that having a high grade is not the purpose of life because
their characters are more determining their success in life.
2. Two-faced Trait
Another characteristic of a hypocrite is two-faced which means that
hypocrites are very difficult to develop true friendships with other people because
of their inconsistency. Instead they are very easy to trait and even.
In addition, they are easy to
sacrifice their own friends in order to achieve their purposes which can
prosper them. It is what exactly mentioned in Al Qur‘an surah An-Nisa verses 139-141 as follows:
"That is those who take unbelievers to
help friends by leaving the believers. Are they looking for strength on the
side of the infidel? Surely all the power belongs to Allah. And indeed Allah
has revealed to you in the Qur'an when you hear the verses of Allah being
denied and mocked by unbelievers, then do not sit down with them, so they talk
another conversation. Because truly if you do it, surely you are same to them.
Truly Allah will gather all the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell, those who
are waiting for events that will happen to you O believers. So if victory for
you by Allah, they say: "Didn't we join the battle with you? "And if
the disbelievers have good luck in the victory they say: "Didn't we also
win you, and defend you from the believers?" Then Allah will make a
decision among you on the Judgment Day and Allah will never give way to the
disbelievers to destroy those who believe".
Based on the verses above,
Ibn Kasir (2004) explained that hypocrites in Madinah had made a tacit alliance
with infidels or polytheists to destroy Muslim.
At the time of the war
between the Muslim and the polytheists and victory on the Muslims, the
hypocrites immediately came forward to raise their hands as who was very
instrumental in helping Muslim to win the Prevention of Hypocritical Behavior
and However, when the Muslim lost and the infidels won, the hypocrites also
appeared to the infidels, clapping their chests as the heroes who determine the
victory over the Muslim. In this case, the betrayal behavior of the mandate
given is a big mistake.
3. Broke Promise
In Al-Qur'an surah at-Taubah verses 75-78, it is explained the hypocritical
characteristics that easily break promises that have been agreed, the
translation of the verses are as follows: And among them there is who have
vowed to Allah: "Verily, if God
gives a part of His gifts to us, we will surely give alms and surely we are
among the pious. So after God gave them a part of His gift, they are stingy
with that gift, and turn away, and they are indeed those who always turn their
backs the truth, so Allah causes hypocrisy in their hearts until they meet God,
because they have denied Allah, what they have vowed to Allah and also because
they always lie, do they not know that Allah knows their secrets and whispers,
and that Allah knows all unseen?
Based on Sabab An-Nuzul,
above verses are actually related to a person named Sala‘bah bin Hatib
Al-Ansari in the era of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (At Thobari, 2000; As-Suyuthi, 1994).
In general, these verses are
addressed to all hypocrites as a reproach to them which easily broke promises.
In this case, they cannot responsible for mandate and any responsibility.
4. Riya’
Riya‘ is another behavior of hypocrites where they want people see their good
deed such as charities, etc.
It is based on Al-Qur‘an
verse 4.142 as stated as follow: ِ
Surely the hypocrites deceive Allah, and Allah will
replay their deception. And when they stand for praying, they stand lazily.
They have riya (in their prayer) of humans. And they do not remember Allah
except very little. As-Suyuthi (1994)
explains the verse above, indeed, the hypocrites deceive Allah by showing
things that are contrary to disbelief that they hide it to avoid the worldly
laws which related it and Allah deceives them to replay their deception by
telling what they hide to His prophet until their secrets were opened in this
world while in the hereafter they will get suffering.
And if they stand to pray
with the believers they stand lazily and they are Riya for human with the
prayer and not do Zikir (remembrance) to Allah by means they do not pray except
for a short time because of Riya.
Moreover, Az-Zamakhsyari
(1966), in his interpretation, Al-Kasysyaf ‗an Haqa'iq AtTanzil wa‗ Uyun
Al-Aqawil fi Wujuh At-Ta'wil, argued that hypocrites only remember Allah only a
little amount of time. Most of their time they spend for world business.
In addition, AzZamakhsyari
(1966) argued that the word Qalila at the end of the verse above can be
interpreted as "adam" which means ―no‖. The sentence implies that
hypocrites do not remember Allah in their prayers or do not glorify to Allah in
their lives. Above kind of behavior describes hypocrites who never ready to
achieve goodness that are Nobel with eternal value? This attitude also
describes a person who does not want to take difficulties, does not want to
work hard, and not willing to sacrifice even a little to achieve positive
aspects in life. Other than that, a person like this intends to make religion
as median to get the world enjoyment. In other words, all his actions are
always based on worldly profits.
Therefore, hypocrites clearly
cannot be expected become social, who is willing to reach out to help others
except with certain rewards. Hypocrites are asocial people. People like this
has little friends, especially true friends, of course people will stay away of
them when they find out their hypocrisy behavior and attitudes.
5. Slander and Share Hoax
The other characteristics of hypocrites are slander and share hoax with the
aimed is to vilify Muslim. In the era of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, hypocrites in Madinah, under the leadership of ‗Abdallah
bin Ubay, often used slander as a weapon to destabilize Muslim.
For example, there was a
hypocrite who slander ‗Aisyah [ra] by saying that ‗Aisyah
did immoral deed with one of Sahabat, Safwan bin Al-Mu'attal.
This slander shocking the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ,until
special Quran surah of An-Nur 24 verses 11-20 were descended to
clean up ‗Aisyah from the accusation.
Hypocritical criteria that have been
described above showed that hypocritical behavior must be shunned by Muslim.
Both classical and modern interpreters do agree that hypocrisy is a very bad
behavior for humanity, it destroys social order, true friendship, brotherhood,
and even always shared hostility to anyone who obstructs his interests. The
importance of hypocrites are worldly benefits, they are not interested
slightest in preparing their provisions in hereafter which more peaceful and
eternal because of their weakness of belief and faith.
Moreover, from the views of Al-Qur‘an and Hadith, it is already explained very
clearly about the consequences of being hypocrites that they will be put in the
lowest level of hell.
Students from early age should be taught
based on Islamic regulation i.e. for not doing sort of characteristics of
hypocites e.g. lying, betraying, breaking promises, riya‘, slander, and spread
lies. People with hypocrites‘traits are very dangerous because they are very
difficult to predict and recognize. They also do sort of worship activities as
other Muslim, but they are away from remembrance of Allah in their heart.
Therefore, teaching our students about faith, morality, as well as Islamic shari‟ah
will lead them to evade them from bad characteristics including hypocrisy.
The Difference Between Major Hypocrisy And
Minor Hypocrisy
Major hypocrisy is the hypocrisy of one who conceals disbelief whilst making an
outward show of being a Muslim. Al-Jarjaani (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The hypocrite is the one who is a disbeliever in his heart but pays lip service
to faith outwardly[5].
The one who pretends outwardly to believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His
Messengers and the Last Day, whilst inwardly believing that which is contrary
to that or part of it, is the hypocrite in the sense of major hypocrisy.
These are the ones who are referred to in the verse in which Allah, may He be
exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, the hypocrites will be
in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire” [Holy Quran Chapter an-Nisa’ 4:145].
Some of the most prominent of their characteristics are lying, treachery,
deceit and resorting to foul speech when disputing.
With
regard to minor hypocrisy – which is also called hypocrisy of actions –
this refers to hypocrisy in deeds. That is when a person does righteous actions
but they do not truly represent what is in his heart, or he behaves differently
in private and in public, but that does not have to do with the fundamentals of
faith mentioned above. Such a person may fall into one of the branches of
hypocrisy of actions, or he may have some of the characteristics of the
hypocrites, such as lying, treachery and breaking promises.
It was narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that
the Prophet ﷺ said: “There are four characteristics, whoever has
them all is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has one of the
characteristics of hypocrisy, until he gives it up: when he is entrusted with
something he betrays that trust, when he speaks he lies, when he makes a
covenant he breaks it, and when he disputes he resorts to obscene speech.[6]”
If any of those who believe in Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah) has any of
these characteristics, he has fallen into minor hypocrisy to the extent to
which he has done such deeds or has that characteristic, because he resembles
the hypocrites in some of their actions, even if he is not exactly like them.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The word hypocrisy refers to major
hypocrisy which means concealing disbelief, or minor hypocrisy which means
behaving differently in private and in public with regard to obligatory duties.
… This is well known among the scholars and this is how they interpreted the words
of the Prophet ﷺ, “The signs
of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he
breaks it, and when he is entrusted with something he betrays that trust.”
Narrated by at-Tirmidhi and others. More than one of the early scholars said: A
lesser form of kufr, a lesser form of hypocrisy, a lesser form of shirk[7].
Al-Haafiz Ibn Rajab (may Allah have
mercy on him) said:
The interpretation given by the respectable scholars is that hypocrisy in the
linguistic sense refers to a kind of treachery and betrayal, making an outward
display of goodness whilst inwardly concealing the opposite. In Islamic terms
it may be divided into two categories, the first of which is major hypocrisy,
which is when a person makes an outward show of believing in Allah, His Angels,
His Books, His Messengers and the Last Day, whilst inwardly concealing the
opposite of that in whole or in part. This is the kind of hypocrisy that
existed at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ,
and Qur’an was revealed condemning those hypocrites and describing them as
disbelievers, and stating that they would be in the lowest level of Hell. The
second type of hypocrisy is minor hypocrisy, which is hypocrisy of deeds. That
is when a person makes an outward show of being righteous when inwardly he is
the opposite of that.
To sum up, minor hypocrisy refers to behaving differently in private and in
public, as was stated by al-Hasan. Minor hypocrisy is a means that may lead to
major hypocrisy, just as sins are the harbinger of disbelief. Just as there is
the fear that the one who persists in sin may be deprived of faith at the time
of death, there is also the fear that the one who persists in one of the
characteristics of hypocrisy will be deprived of faith and will become a pure
hypocrite. Imam Ahmad was asked: What do you say about one who does not fear
hypocrisy for himself? He said: Who can be sure that he is safe from hypocrisy?
Al-Hasan used to call the one who did deeds of hypocrisy a hypocrite, and
something similar was narrated from Hudhayfah[8].
If a person has any level of minor hypocrisy and dies in that state, he
will not remain in Hell for eternity. Rather the one who will remain in Hell
for eternity is the hypocrite in the sense of major hypocrisy. However, minor
hypocrisy is a means that may lead to major hypocrisy, as stated above. Hence
the Sahaabah and the early generations (may Allah be pleased with them) used to
seek refuge with Allah from it[9].
Based on that, if any Muslim has any of the characteristics of minor hypocrisy,
he is not one of those who will remain in Hell forever; rather he is subject to
the will of Allah, may He be exalted, in the Hereafter: if He wills, He will
punish him in Hell for his sin, then bring him forth from it because of his
belief in Tawheed, or if He wills, He will forgive him from the outset. His
situation is like that of sinners among the monotheists. As for the hypocrite
in the sense of major hypocrisy, he will abide forever in Hell – we seek refuge
with Allah from the Fire[10].
How dangerous is hypocrisy for the Muslims from
Quranic point?
Hypocrisy in Islam is a serious
sickness and a great crime. Hypocrisy means making an outward display of Islam
whilst inwardly concealing disbelief.
Towards Understanding the [Holy Quran Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:1-8]
(O Prophet), when the
hypocrites come to you, they say: “We bear witness that you are certainly
Allah's Messenger.” Allah certainly knows that you are His Messenger. But Allah
also bears witness that the hypocrites are utter liars! [Holy Quran Surah
Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
[That is, although the thing they are uttering with
the tongue is true by itself, it does not reflect their belief. Therefore they
lie when they say that they bear witness that you are a Messenger (peace be
upon him) of Allah. Here, one should clearly understand that an evidence or
witness is composed of two things: first, the actual thing to which one bears
the witness; second, the concerned person’s own belief about the thing to which
he bears the witness, Now, if the thing by itself is true and the belief of the
bearer of witness also corresponds to what he says, he will be truthful in
every respect. And if the thing in itself is false; but the bearer of the
witness believes it to be right and true, he will be regarded as truthful in
one way, for he is truthful in expressing his belief, and liar in another way,
for the thing he is bearing witness to is by itself false. Contrary to this, if
the thing by itself is true but the belief of the bearer of the witness is
opposed to it, he will be regarded as truthful because he is testifying to the
right thing, and a liar because his own belief is contrary to what he is saying
with the tongue. For instance, if a believer states that Islam is a true
religion, he is truthful in every respect, but if a Jew, while he is steadfast
in his Judaism, states the same thing, he would be stating the right thing but
his evidence would be regarded as false, for he is testifying against his faith
and belief. And if he calls it a false religion, he would be uttering a false
thing but he would be bearing a true witness according to his belief.]
They shelter behind their oath, [2] and thus hinder their own selves and others from
the Path of Allah. [3] Evil indeed is what they
do. [Holy Quran Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:2]
Notes:
[2]. That is, they use the oaths that they
swear to convince others of their Islam and faith as a shield to save
themselves from the wrath of the Muslims so that they do not treat them as they
treat their open enemies.
These oaths may imply the oaths which they usually swear to convince others of
their faith as well as those which they swore when they were caught committing
some hypocritical act, and also those oaths which Abdullah bin Ubayy had sworn
to contradict the report given by Zaid bin Arqam. Besides these, there is
another probability that Allah might have regarded this statement of theirs as
an oath: We bear witness that you are Allah’s Messenger. This last probability
has given rise to a dispute among the jurists, namely: If a person states
something with the words: I bear witness, will it be regarded as an oath or
not? Imam Abu Hanifah and his companions (except Imam Zufar), Imam Sufyan
Thauri and Imam Auzai regard it as an oath (Yamin in the Shariah terminology).
Imam Zufar says that it is not an oath. Two sayings from Imam Malik have been
reported in this connection: First, that it is an oath absolutely, and second,
that if while saying: I bear witness, his intention was to say: My God, I bear
witness, or I bear witness before God, it would be a statement on oath,
otherwise not. Imam Shafei says: Even if the person says the words: I bear
witness before God. it would not be a statement made on oath, unless he uttered
these words with the intention of swearing an oath[11],
[3]. The verb sadd in Arabic is transitive as
well as intransitive. Therefore, saddu-un sabil-Allah means; They turn away
from the way of Allah, as well as: they turn others away from the way of Allah.
According to the first meaning the verse would mean: By means of these oaths,
they first plant themselves firmly among the Muslims and then invent ways to
escape fulfilling demands of the faith and to avoid obedience to Allah and His
Messenger. According to the second meaning it would mean: They use their false
oaths as a cover for committing evil deeds. Posing as Muslims they weaken the
Muslim community from within: find out the secrets of the Muslims and convey
these to their enemies: create doubts about Islam among the non-Muslims and use
such devices for inspiring the simple Muslims with evil suggestions which only
a hypocrite in the guise of a Muslim could do, for an open enemy of Islam
cannot use them.
۞
All that is because they
first believed and then disbelieved, and therefore a seal was set on their
hearts; as a result they understand nothing. [Holy Quran Surah Al-Munafiqun
63:3]
Notes [In this
verse believing means professing the faith in order to be counted among
Muslims, and disbelieving means not to believe sincerely and to persist in
disbelief as usual. The verse means to say that when they, after due thought,
decided to adopt this hypocritical attitude instead of adopting either belief
or disbelief plainly, Allah caused a seal to be set on their hearts and
deprived them of the grace to adopt the attitude and conduct of a true, sincere
and noble person. Now, their power of understanding has been lost, their moral
sense has become dead, and while following this way they never even feel that
their habit of always telling lies, their deceitful behavior and the ever
present contradictions between their word and deed is a wretched state in which
they have involved themselves.
This is one of those verses in which the meaning of “causing a seal to be set
on the heart of somebody by Allah” has been made clear. These people did not
become hypocrites because Allah had set a seal on their hearts; so faith did
not enter them, and they became hypocrites under compulsion. But, in fact,
Allah set a seal on their hearts only when they decided to persist in disbelief
in spite of professing the faith outwardly. Then, they were deprived of the
capacity to believe sincerely and of the grace of the moral attitude resulting
from it, and were helped to persist in the hypocrisy and hypocritical morals,
which they had chosen to adopt for themselves.]
When you look at them, their
persons are pleasing, and when they speak, you pay heed to what they say.[5]
But in truth they are (merely) beams of timber propped-up (against a wall).[6]
They consider every shout they hear to be directed against them.[7] They are
your utter enemies;[8] guard against them.]9] May Allah do away with them![10]
How are they being turned away (from the Truth)?[11] [Holy Quran Surah
Al-Munafiqun 63:4]
Notes
[5]. Abdullah bin Abbas has stated that Abdullah bin
Ubayy was a strongly built, healthy, handsome and smoothtongued person, and the
same was the case with most of his companions. They were all the nobles of
Al-Madinah. When they came to sit in the Prophet’s (peace be upon him)
assembly, they would sit reclining on cushions against the walls and would talk
agreeably and convincingly. From their outward appearance and manner of speech
no one could imagine that those honorable people of the city would be so
wretched and degraded in their character.
[6]. That is, those who sit reclining on cushions against the walls, are not
but but pieces of timber. Comparing them to timber is meant to imply that they
are devoid of the moral sense which is the essence of humanity. Then by
comparing them to blocks of timber propped up against the wall, it has also
been pointed out that they are absolutely worthless, for the timber would be useful
only when it has been utilized in making of a ceiling, or a door frame, or a
piece of furniture. A block of timber that has just been placed against a wall
serves no useful purpose at all.
[7]. This brief sentence portrays the state of their guilty conscience. Since
they fully knew what game of hypocrisy they were playing under the screen of
their superficial faith, they always remained in a state of alarm, thinking as
to when the secret of their treason might be exposed, or the believers might
feel disgusted with their evil deeds and machinations and take them to task for
them. If ever a cry was raised anywhere in the city, or a noise was heard; they
immediately grew alarmed and thought it was directed against themselves.
[8]. In other words, these hidden enemies are more dangerous than the open
enemies.
[9]. That is, do not be deceived by their outward appearances. Beware of them,
for they can deceive you at any moment.
[10]. This is not a curse but a declaration of the verdict about them by Allah
that they have become worthy of His punishment and He will certainly inflict
His punishment on them. It is also possible that Allah may not have used these
words in their literal sense but in the meaning of a curse and condemnation
according to Arabic idiom.
[11]. It has not been pointed out as to who perverts them from belief to
hypocrisy. This by itself makes it clear that there is not one but many factors
responsible for their perversion. There is Satan, there are their evil friends,
and there are their own selfish motives. Someone’s wife or children become his
motive, and someone is driven to perversion by the evil ones in his society, or
by jealousy, spite and pride[12].
When it is said to them: “Come, Allah's
Messenger will seek forgiveness for you,” they (contemptuously) shake their
heads and you see them holding back in pride. [Holy Quran Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:5]
[That is, they not only refuse to come to the
Messenger to seek forgiveness, but also on hearing the invitation they shake
their heads with arrogance and pride, and remain adamant, thinking that it
would be disgraceful for them to approach the Messenger (peace be upon him) to
seek forgiveness. This is a clear sign that they are not believers.]
It is all the same for them whether you ask
forgiveness for them or not; for Allah shall never forgive them.[13 ]Surely
Allah does not direct the transgressing folk to the Right Way.[14] [Holy Quran
Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:6].
Notes
[13]. This thing was reiterated in Surah At-Taubah,
which was revealed three years after Surah Al-Munafiqoon, even in stronger
words. In that Surah, Allah, while addressing the Prophet (peace be upon him)
said this about the hypocrites: O Prophet (it will be all the same) whether you
beg forgiveness for them or not, for Allah will not forgive them even if you
beg forgiveness for them seventy times. This is because they have disbelieved
in Allah and His Messenger, and Allah does not show guidance to the wrongdoers.
(Surah At-Taubah, Ayat 80). A little further on in that Surah it was again
said: And never perform the funeral prayer for anyone of them who dies nor
stand at his grave, for they have denied Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon
him) and died while they were transgressors. (Surah At-Taubah, Ayat 84).
[14]. Two things have been stated in this verse. First, that the prayer of
forgiveness can be beneficial only for those who are guided aright. Let alone a
common man, even if Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) himself prays for the
forgiveness of the person, who has turned away from guidance and adopted the
way of sin and transgression instead of obedience, he cannot be forgiven.
Second, that it is not Allah’s way to bless with guidance those who do not seek
His guidance. If a person himself turns away from Allah’s guidance, rather
shakes his head with arrogance and rejects the invitation when he is called
towards guidance, Allah has no need that He should go after him with His
guidance and implore him to come to the right path.
It is they who say: “Give nothing to those who
are with the Messenger of Allah so that they may disperse.” (They say so
although) the treasures of the heavens and the earth belong to Allah. But the
hypocrites do not understand. [Holy Quran
Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:7]
They say: “When we return to
Madinah, the honourable ones will drive out from it those that are abject.”[15]
In truth, all honour belongs to Allah, and to His Messenger, and to the
believers.[16] But the hypocrites do not know. [Holy Quran Surah Al-Munafiqun
63:8]
Notes
[15]. Zaid bin Arqam says: When I reported these words
of Abdullah bin Ubayy to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and Abdullah bin
Ubayy came and disowned them on oath, the elderly people of the Ansar, and even
my own uncle, reproved me for this; so much so that I felt that the Prophet
(peace be upon him) had also mistaken me for a liar and Abdullah bin Ubayy for
a truthful person. This caused me great anguish and grief. Then, when these
verses were revealed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) called me, and taking
hold of my ear, said: The boy’s ear was truthful Allah has himself testified to
what it had heard. (Ibn Jarir. In Tirmidhi also there is a tradition on the
same subject).
[16]. That is, all honor belongs to Allah in virtue of His essence, to the
Prophet (peace be upon him) in virtue of his prophethood, and to the believers
in virtue of their faith. As for the disbelievers, the wicked people and the
hypocrites, they have no share whatsoever in the real true honor.
