Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum WA-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu.
Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His
forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from
our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and
whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is
no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His
slave and Messenger.

Preamble
The fate of hypocrites on the
resurrection day [Section 2 of 2]
Hadith on Sujud: Hypocrites
unable to prostrate on Judgment Day
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Prophet, ﷺ, said, “Our Lord will reveal His shin and every
believing man and woman will prostrate to Him, but there will remain those who
prostrated in the world for ostentation and respectability. They will try to
prostrate, but their back will be as stiff as a single bone.[2]”
Hadith on
Hypocrisy: Three signs of a
hypocrite, even if he is Muslim
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,
said, “Among the signs of a hypocrite are three, even if he fasts and prays and
claims to be a Muslim: when he speaks he lies, when he gives a
promise he breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays[3].”
Hypocrisy
– Disease of the Heart
Hypocrisy is referred to as a disease of the heart. And many people in our
society do not even realize that they display the signs of a hypocrite through
their actions. This disease of the soul spreads aggressively if a person does
not acknowledge it and seek its cure. Hypocrisy not only results in dire
consequences but it also has an impact on the people that surround the
hypocrites. As mentioned in Qur’an,
“And of the
people are some who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ but they are
not believers. They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they
deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not. In their hearts is
disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful
punishment because they [habitually] used to lie” [Holy
Quran Chapter 2:8-10].
So What is Hypocrisy?
Hypocrisy, also known as double
facedness, is the vile characteristic of an individual who portrays behaviour
of that is contradicts their inner state. Such people glorify their outward
appearance for the sake of gaining reputational benefits.
Example of Hypocrisy
For example, a person may give an impression of being friendly and sincere,
pretend to be a well-wisher. He act as a person following a creed or faith but
his inner self, state of the heart is completely opposite. Such kind of people
shows that they are good in front of others but in the absence of people they
display opposite traits. This is regarded as hypocrisy and Allah dislikes such
people that acquire such traits.
What does
Quran say about Hypocrites?
In Surah Al-Munafiqoon, Allah (Subhanahu
Wa Taala) clearly mentioned that
“The hypocrites, they are in the lowest pit of Hellfire”. The lower is the hell
fire, the tougher is gets. Allah (Subhanahu
Wa Taala) has reserved the lower pits of hell fire for hypocrites
[Al-munafiqoon].
At two different instances, Allah says
to our Prophet ﷺ,
“It is all
the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask
forgiveness for them; never will Allah forgive them” [Holy
Quran Chapter 63:6]
Hypocrites reaches to the peak of
disobedience of Allah’s commandments through their actions that there is no
point of return for them. Even if another person asks forgiveness of Allah on
behalf of them, it is same as not asking for forgiveness. Allah has told
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that if he asks Him to forgive them or never asked,
it will not make any difference as hypocrisy is a sin that is never forgiven by
Allah. Allah says,
“If you
should ask forgiveness for them seventy times – never will Allah forgive them”
[Holy Quran Chapter 9:80]
Types of Hypocrites
There are two types of hypocrites mentioned in the shariah.
An-Nifaq Al-Akbar:
It is when the external appearance of the person is having full belief on
Allah, His book, His messengers and His angels as well as the day of Judgement.
But this person conceals within his real thoughts that negates all or some of
these facts. Out Prophet ﷺ was confronted with hypocrites which are referred by
Allah as the ones that are in the lowest depths of the hell-fire.
An-Nifaq Al-Asghar:
This is a less intense form of hypocritical act. In this type of the external
appearance i.e., the goodness and the good deeds that is portrayed completely
negates the inner self of the person. This kind of hypocrisy is built on the
four key signs mentioned in the hadith.
Signs of a Hypocrite
Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (RA) says that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Four traits whoever possesses them is a hypocrite and whoever possesses some
of them has an element of hypocrisy until he leaves it: the one who when he
speaks, he lies, when he promises he breaks his promise, when he disputes he
transgresses and when he makes an agreement he violates it” [Sahih Muslim and
Bukhari].
To evaluate oneself and knows about hypocrites around you, it is important that
you must look out these signs and characteristics of people.
1. Whenever they speak, their speech is full of lies.
2. When there is an argument, they explode with anger and disagrees with the
facts.
3. Whenever they are entrusted with something, they violate the trust.
4. Such people tend to break their promises.
5. They are lazy and avoid prayers by giving unreasonable excuses.
How
you can one avoid being hypocritical?
Avoid looking down on others and being arrogant with people based on their
financial level. Be sincere and consistent with your words and acts. Do not
have a different public and private life. Stay with sincere people and always
keep your intention in check[4].
The Parable of the Hypocrites
“The likeness is that of one who kindled a fire, and
then when it had lit up all around them, Allah removed their light and left
them in darkness, unable to see. Deaf, dumb and blind, they will not return. Or
that of a storm-cloud in the sky, full of darkness, thunder and lightening.
They thrust their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps, fearful of
death. Allah encompasses the disbelievers. The lighting all but snatches away
their sight. Whenever they have light, they walk therein but whenever darkness
covers them, they halt. If Allah wished, He could take away their hearing and
their sight; for Allah has power over all things.” (Holy
Quran Surah al-Baqarah: 17-20)
After propounding this parable of fire,
Allah propounds another parable for the hypocrites, this time of water.
Sayyib mentioned in the verse refers to driving rain which pours down from the
sky. Here the guidance with which He guided His servants has been likened to
water because guidance gives life to the hearts as water gives life to the
earth. The portion that the hypocrite gets from this guidance is the same as
one who is caught in this storm cloud but gets nothing from it save darkness,
thunder, and lightening; having no notion of its many benefits such as life for
the earth – its animals and vegetation – springs forth after rain. The
darkness, thunder, and lightening in a storm-cloud are not matters that are
desired in and of themselves, rather they are matters that lead to the
accomplishment of what is desired from this cloud. The ignoramus suffices with
merely seeing the outward effects of this cloud: the darkness, the thunder, the
lightening, the cold, and the fact that he is prevented from travelling, but
has no inkling of the huge benefit that comes as a result of this rain. This is
true of every short-sighted, dull witted person; his perception does not go
deeper than seeing the outward form of things and he does not see what is
behind them. This is the state of the majority of creation except for a few
amongst them. When the short-sighted sees the hardship and toil that is to be
found in Jihad, when he sees the fact that he could be wounded, censured by
certain people, and excite enmity in others; he does not go forth for Jihad. He
is unable to probe deeper and realise the great benefits, the praiseworthy
goals, and great rewards it contains. When one of them desires to perform the
pilgrimage and sees the hardships entailed in the journey, the living of the
comfort of his home and town, and difficulties to be faced, he cannot see
beyond this to what lies at the end of this journey and as such falters and
does not undertake it.
This is the state of those who lack spiritual insight and are weak of faith:
those who see the threats, promises, commands, and prohibitions that are to be
found in the Qur’an as ordinances that are too heavy for their egos which
desire only to follow their lusts. These ordinances wean the soul of its base
qualities. Weaning is truly difficult for the child; and all men are children
with respect to their intellects with the exception of those who have weaned
and regulated them, and as such have comprehended the truth by way of knowledge
and action. It is such people who are able to see what is behind this
storm-cloud; what is behind the darkness, thunder, and lightening; it is such
people who realise that this storm cloud is the source of life for existence.
Az-Zamakhshari said, “The religion of Islam has been likened to the cloud,
because hearts are given life by it as the heath is by water, disbelief has
been likened to darkness; threat and promise has been likened to thunder and
lightening; and trials and tribulations that terrify the disbelievers have been
likened to thunderclaps. The meaning of “or that of a storm-cloud” is ‘or that
of people caught in a storm-cloud.’
Both These Parables Contain Great
Points Of Wisdom:
1. The one who is seeking light from something else, not from himself; when
that light goes, he remains in that original darkness. This is the state of the
hypocrite; he affirms belief on his tongue but does not believe or have love in
his heart; as such what light he acquires as a result of this is borrowed.
2. Fire requires fuel to keep it alight. This fuel is comparable to food that
is required to sustain animal life. Likewise the light of faith requires fuels
so as to maintain it: beneficial knowledge and righteous action. If this fuel
is taken away, it dies out.
3. Darkness is of two types: perpetual darkness which is not preceded by light
and a temporal darkness which is preceded by light. It is the later of these
two which is most severe upon the one who faces it. The darkness of the
hypocrites is of the second type for they saw the light and then were plunged
into darkness.
4. This parable points to their state in the Hereafter for there they will be
given a superficial light just as their light in this world was superficial.
Then at the time when they need light most, it will suddenly die: they will
halt on the Bridge and be unable to cross it for only those with firm light may
do so. That light is only made firm with beneficial knowledge and righteous
actions. Therefore their parable which describes their state in this life
corresponds to their state in the Hereafter: when light is apportioned the
people before the Bridge, the light of the believers will remain and the light
of the hypocrites will die. When this is understood one understands why Allah
said, “Allah removed their light” employing the ‘ba‘ and did not say ‘Adh-Habaallahu
Nurahum“. For further detail one can read the hadith recorded by Muslim
on the authority of Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him. He was
asked about the crossing of the Bridge to which he replied, “We would come on
the Day of Judgement on a hill standing above the people. Then the people will
be summoned along with the idols that they used to worship, one after another.
Then our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, would come to us and say, ‘Who are you
waiting for?’ They would say, ‘We are waiting for our Lord’ He would say, ‘I am
your Lord.’ They say, ‘We are not sure until we look upon You.’ He would then
manifest Himself and laugh, and would leave them with the following. Every
person among them, and the believer and the hypocrite, would be given light. On
the Bridge spanning Hell there would be hooks and spikes which would die out
and the believers would secure salvation. This first group saved would consist
of seventy thousand people whose faces would have faces like the stars of the
sky, and so on. The intercession would commence till the point that there would
come out of the Hellfire the one who said, ‘None has the right to be worshipped
save Allah,’ and there was only in his heart a barley grain’s worth of faith.
They would be brought to the courtyard of Paradise and inhabitants of Paradise
would sprinkle water over them…” to the end of the hadith. Ponder carefully His
saying ‘…and would leave with them following. Every person among them, the
believer and the hypocrite, would be given light…” and ponder carefully His
saying, “Allah removed their light and left them in darkness unable to see” and
ponder their state of darkness whereas the believers proceed on, following
their Lord. Ponder his, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying in the
hadith concerning the intercession,
”Every nation will follow the god that
they used to worship,” the polytheist will follow his god and the person of
Tawhid will follow Allah. Ponder his saying, “The Day the shin will be uncovered and
they are summoned to prostrate but they will not be able to.” (Holy Quran Surah
Al-Qalam:42) He, peace and blessings
of Allah be upon him, mentioned this verse in the hadith of intercession on
this occasion talked about in the previous hadith and in the hadith he said,
“..so He will uncover His shin,’ and thereby made clear that it was His shin
that was being talked about in the verse. Ponder all of this and you will come
to understand a secret from the secrets of Tawhid, understanding the Qur’an,
and how Allah deals with the people of Tawhid as compared to the people of
shirk.
5. The first parable deals with them acquiring darkness which is a similitude
for misguidance and confusion, the opposite of which is guidance. The second
parable deals with their acquiring fear, the opposite of which is safety and
security. The hypocrites are not guided and neither are they safe,
“Those who believe and do not mix their faith with any
wrongdoing, they are the one who are safe; it is they who are guided.” (Holy
Quran Surah Al-Anam:82) Ibn Abbas and
other exegetes said, “the similitude of
these people’s hypocrisy is that of a person who kindled a fire in a dark night
on a terrifying occasion. He warms himself up, sees what is around him, and is
saved from what he feared; then while in that state, the fire is suddenly
extinguished and he remains once again in that darkness in a state of fear and
utter confusion. The hypocrites, but they outwardly testifying to faith, have
secured their wealth and children, they marry the believers, they inherit from
them, and they acquire a portion of the war booty. This is their light, but
when they die, they return once again to darkness and fear.’
6. Mujahid said, ‘The fire alighting for them means their going towards the
Muslim and guidance. Their light being taken away means their going towards the
polytheists and misguidance.’
The acquiring of light and its removal has been explained variously to take
place in this life, or the life of the grave, or in the Hereafter. The correct
position is that it occurs in all three stages of life, for they are
recompensed for their state in this world in three stages with,
“.. a fitting recompense.” (Holy Quran Surah
an-Naba:26)
“Your Lord does not wrong His slaves” (Holy Quran
Surah Fussilat:46)
In the resurrection a person shall reap what he sowed in this world and that is
why it is called the Day of Recompense,
“Those who are blind in this world will be blind in
the Hereafter and even further off the Path.” (Holy Quran Surah al-Isra:72)
“Allah augments those who are guided by giving them
greater guidance” (Holy Quran Surah Maryam:76)
To return to the discussion at hand…
Allah the Blessed and Exalted, has propounded two parables, one for fire and
one for water, in Surah al-Baqarah, Surah al-Rad and Surah al-Nur. This is
because life comes about through water and light; the believer has a living and
illuminated heart, and the hypocrite has a dead heart. Allah, Exalted is He
says,
“Is someone who was dead and whom We brought to life,
supplying him with light be which to walk among people, the same as someone who
is in utter darkness, unable to emerge from it?” Holy Quran Surah al-Anam:122)
“The blind and the seeing are not he same, nor are the
darkness and the light, nor are cool shade and fierce heat. The living and dead
are not the same, Allah makes anyone He wills to hear but you cannot make those
in the grave hear.” (Holy Quran Surah Fatir:19-22)
Therefore He considered those who
follow His guidance, and illuminate themselves with His light to be active,
taking refuge under a shade that saves them from the heat of doubts,
misguidance, innovation, and shirk. And he considered one who does not do so to
be blind and dead, submerged in the heat of disbelief, shirk and misguidance,
engulfed in layer after layer of darkness[5].
Fate
of the Hypocrites
Deceitfulness of the hypocrites -Friendship with the enemies - Fate of the
hypocrites
"Verily the hypocrites seek to trick Allah, but
He is tricking them. And, when they stand up for prayer they stand up lazily;
showing off to the people, and they do not remember Allah save a little."
Holy Quran Surah An-Nisa', Verse 142
The purpose of 'the hypocrites seek to trick Allah', perhaps, is the same
expression of Faith by them and playing with the commandments of Allah.
"Verily the hypocrites seek to trick Allah, but
He is tricking them. ..."
However,
they are far from Allah and, consequently, they do not enjoy telling Allah
their secrets and praying for their needs. That is why when they stand for
prayer they are thoroughly full of listlessness and laziness. It says:
"...And, when they stand up for prayer they
stand up lazily...."
The
hypocrites, in fact, do not believe in Allah and His magnificent promises. Then
if they worship or do a righteous deed, it is also for showing off to people,
not for the sake of Allah. "...showing off to people
..."
So, if they sometimes recite the name of Allah or remember Him, it is not done
sincerely and knowingly. Supposing that it is, might be, it is very little. It
says: "...and they do not remember Allah save a little."
"(The hypocrites are) swaying between this
(infidelity and Faith) neither towards these (believers) nor towards those
(infidels); and whoever Allah leaves to go astray, never then shall you find
for him a way." Holy Quran Surah An-Nisa', Verse 143
Therefore, the hypocrites do not have a firm thing to rely on, and they sway
between this and that, like a thing which is suspended in the air and moves by
the movement of a wind. They depend on others, so they wander without having
any proper aim.
"(The hypocrites are) swaying between this (infidelity and Faith) neither
towards these (believers) nor towards those (infidels); "....
Also, they have not tranquility and peace, because they must always change
their own position to a new one and hurriedly make immediate decisions.
And, to conclude, the hypocrites are stray, and have incurred the wrath of
Allah. The verse continues saying: "….and whoever Allah leaves
to go astray, never then shall you find for him a way."
" O' you who have faith! Do not take the
disbelievers for friends instead of the believers. Do you desire that you
should give Allah a manifest proof against yourselves?" Holy Quran Surah
An-Nisa', Verse 144
The
believers have not the right of accepting the master ship of the disbelievers.
But it is in the case that the hypocrites have a close tie with the
disbelievers. The Qur'an introduces the disbelievers as Satans of the
hypocrites: "...when they are alone with
their evil ones ..."
And
they are as brethren of the hypocrites: "...those who have become
hypocrites? They say to those of their brethren who disbelieve..."
The senses mentioned in Holy Quran Surah Nisa No.4. Verse 139 and 141 are also
indications to the quality of the connection between the hypocrites and the disbelievers.
Any
communication, friendship, and agreement contraction that results to the loss
of Muslims should be avoided of.
"Do you desire that you should give Allah a
manifest proof against yourselves?"
Accepting the master ship of disbelievers does not adapt to Faith. There is no
room in a heart for two opposite affections "O' you who have Faith!
..."
"Verily the hypocrites are in the lowest stage
of the Fire, and never you shall find a helper for them." Holy Quran Surah
An-Nisa', Verse 145
There are some unaware Muslims who accept the friendship of the hypocrites. To
make clear the situation of the hypocrites, the Qur'an in this verse says:
"Verily the hypocrites are in the lowest stage
of the Fire, and never you shall find a helper for them."
It is well understood from this verse that hypocrisy is the worst kind of
infidelity from the point of view of Islam, and the hypocrites are the furthest
distant people from Allah. So, it is for this reason that their abode is in the
worst place and the lowest stage of Hell.
"Except those who repent, and amend and hold
fast to (the grace of) Allah and make their religion pure for Allah. These,
then, are with the believers; and Allah will grant the believers a great
reward." Holy Quran Surah An-Nisa', Verse 146
The way of repentance is open to all, even to the worst ones. Repentance can
take a person from the position of 'the lowest stage of the Fire' to 'the
Exalted Heaven'. The Qur'an says: "Except those who
repent....."
Human
beings are free and can change the way, i.e. they can repent: "...those who
repent....."
Repentance
is not only an expression of regret, but it is an inclusive improvability. The
verse continues saying: "...and amend and hold fast
(the grace of) Allah and make their religion pure for Allah ..."
Those
hypocrites who repent should not feel loneliness for the absence of their
fellow-minded, because they find some better colleagues instead of them. "....these, then, are with the believers… "
Eclecticism
in creed and thoughts is forbidden: ".....and
make their religion pure for Allah ..."
Then,
it is to the believers to receive the true repentant ones and consider them as
themselves. "... these, then, are with
the believers and Allah will grant the believers a great reward."
"What can Allah gain by your punishment, if you
are grateful and you believe? And Allah is All-Thankful, All-Knowing."
Holy Quran Surah An-Nisa', Verse 147
If you believe and do righteous deeds and, in the meantime, you do not abuse the
bounties of Allah, and be grateful for the bounties of Allah, without doubt,
there will not be any divine punishment upon you. The verse says:
"What can Allah gain by your punishment if you
are grateful...."
Then,
in order to emphasize this matter, it adds that the Lord is both aware of your
deeds and your thoughts, and is thankful and giver of reward for your righteous
deeds. It says: "...And Allah is
All-Thankful, All-Knowing."
In the above-mentioned verse, the subject of 'thankfulness' has occurred before
the sense of 'belief '. This precedence is for the fact that as long as a
person does not know the bounties and graces of Allah and does not reach the
position of gratitude, cannot know Him, Himself (Subhanahu Wa Taala.). (Be
careful.)
"Allah does not love open utterance of evil in
speech except by one to whom injustice has been done, and Allah is All-Hearing,
All-Knowing." Holy Quran Surah An-Nisa', Verse 148
In this verse and the verse next to it, a part of the ethical instructions of
Islam are pointed out. At first, the verse indicates that Allah does not like
that ill-speaking be performed or the vice and disgraceful actions of people be
manifested by the speech of others. It says: "Allah
does not love open utterance of evil in speech ..."
As
Allah Himself is the Concealer of Faults, He does not love that individuals
betray secrets and make manifest the vices of people so that they disgrace them.
Then, the Qur'an refers to some affairs that can be counted as the authority
for such betraying secrets and ill-speaking. It says: "...except by one to whom injustice has been done....."
Such
persons are right to defend themselves against the cruelty of transgressors.
They can complain of them, criticize them, blame them, and backbite them. They
are also right to continue doing that until they get their right and ward off
the transgression.
And, as the style of the Qur'an is, in order that some persons do not misuse
this exception and do not make manifest the vices of people under the pretext
that they have been transgressed, at the end of the verse, it says: "...And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing."
"If you do good openly or conceal it or pardon
(others) evil, then verily Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Powerful." Holy
Quran Surah An-Nisa', Verse 149
Whenever you are in the position of power, and forgiveness has a training
effect, do forgive; and wherever silence is abasement, and it strengthens
injustice, do shout.
Therefore, vengeance and retaliation is 'legitimate', when remittal and
forgiveness is 'virtue'. So, it is worthy to pardon when you are powerful. It
says: "....then verily Allah is All-Pardoning,
All-Powerful."
"When you gain power over your adversary, pardon him as gratitude for
being able to overpower him."
"Verily those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers,
and desire to make division between Allah and His Messengers, and say: 'We
believe in some and disbelieve in others', and seek to choose a way in
between."
151. "These are, in truth, infidels, and We have prepared for the infidels
a disgraceful chastisement." Holy Quran Surah Verse 150 - 151
The Jews and the Christians believed in some prophets and disbelieved in some
other ones. This kind of behaviour was because of their foolishly desires and
bigotries, and also because of some unreasonable insularity.
The verse says: "Verily those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers,
and desire to make division between Allah and His Messengers, and say: 'We believe in some and
disbelieve in others'....."
It
should also be attended that the process of messenger ship is the permanent
Allah's, way of treatment which are linked together like a chain, and we must
believe in this process totally.
Therefore, Allah and His messengers are in the same row and there is no
separation in between at all. Then, it is forbidden to disbelieve in Allah and
the messengers, or to believe in Allah and disbelieve in some Prophets.
Eclecticism and paving a way other than the way of prophets is infidelity.
"..and seek to choose a way in between....."
"These are, in truth, infidels, and We have prepared for the infidels a
disgraceful chastisement."
"And those who believe in Allah and His
Messengers and make no division between any of them, He will grant them their
rewards, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." Holy Quran Surah An-Nisa',
Verse 152
In this verse, the Qur'an points to the position and the fate of the believers.
It implies that those who believed in Allah and all His prophets and did not
make any separation between them, have proved their own submission and
sincerity unto the Truth and also proved to struggle against any bigotry. As
for these Allah will bestow their rewards soon. The verse says: "And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no
division between any of them, He will grant them their rewards…..."
And, at
the end of the verse, another fact is referred to. It indicates that if this
group of the believers had formerly committed such bigotries, divisions, and
some other sins, and now have purified their Faith and returned to Allah, He
will forgive them. "...and Allah is Forgiving,
Merciful."
Will every Muslim enter Paradise, even if he was a hypocrite
or did not pray or committed shirk?
We should understand properly the general principle concerning this matter, the
matter of entering Paradise and spending eternity in Hell. It is a simple matter
that is explained in a brief Hadeeth that was narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh (135) from Jaabir (may Allah be pleased with
him) who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said:
O Messenger of Allah, what are the two deeds that make entering Paradise or Hell inevitable?
He said: “Whoever dies not associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise,
and whoever dies associating anything with Allah will enter Hell.”
An-Nawawi said: With regard to the words, “What are the two deeds that make
entering Paradise or Hell inevitable?” what is meant are the characteristic
that makes Paradise inevitable and the characteristic that makes Hell
inevitable. End quote.
This hadeeth explains that what makes it inevitable that a person will enter
Paradise is if he dies believing in Tawheed, and what makes it inevitable that
a person will spend eternity in Hell is if he dies believing in shirk.
This is a definitive principle that is well-known and well established in the
religion of Islam. There are mutawaatir texts which confirm and affirm it.
Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ
بِهِۦ وَيَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٲلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ
فَقَدِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰٓ إِثۡمًا عَظِيمًا (٤٨)
“Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be
set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom
He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed
invented a tremendous sin”[
Holy Quran Chapter an-Nisa’ 4:48].
The Prophet ﷺ explained, in the hadeeth about intercession, the
situation of the sinners in Hell, and he explained that no one will be brought
out of Hell except those who died believing in Tawheed and uttered the
Shahaadah (testimony of faith), and had in their hearts something of faith: “There will be brought out of the Fire
anyone who said, Laa ilaaha ill-Allah (there is no god but Allah) and had in
his heart goodness equal to the weight of a grain of barley. Then there will be
brought out of the Fire anyone who said Laa ilaaha ill-Allah (there is no god
but Allah) and had in his heart goodness equal to the weight of a grain of
wheat. Then there will be brought out of the Fire anyone who said Laa ilaaha
ill-Allah (there is no god but Allah) and had in his heart goodness equal to
the weight of a small ant.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6861; Muslim, 285.
Based on that, we can find out the situation of those mentioned in the
question.
1. If a person fell into major shirk, whether he was originally a Mushrik like
the Jews, Christians, Buddhists and other types of disbelievers, or he was a
Muslim then he Apostatised from Islam by falling into major shirk – as
mentioned in the question – then his claim to belong to Islam or his having a
Muslim name will be of no benefit to him, and neither will any good deeds that
he did and so on, if he fell into major shirk and died in that state without
having repented. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the
meaning):
“And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad (ﷺ)), as it was to those (Allahs Messengers) before you:
‘If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will
be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers.’
Nay! But worship Allah (Alone and none else), and be among the grateful”
[Holy Quran az-Zumar 39:65-66].
2. The one who does not pray at all, either in his house or in the mosque, and
does not attend Jumu‘ah or prayers in congregation, has also rendered his good
deeds invalid and has falling into kufr by not praying at all. The Messenger of
Allah ﷺ said: “The covenant that stands between us and them –
i.e., the characteristic that separates the Muslims from the disbelievers – is
the prayer. Whoever does not pray has disbelieved.”Narrated by at-Tirmidhi, 2545; an-Nasaa’i, 459. classed as saheeh by
al-Albaani.
3. With regard to the hypocrites, if what is meant is the people of major
hypocrisy, namely those who make a show of being believers in this world when
they are concealing kufr in their hearts and hiding it from the people, they
will be in a worse position than the kuffaar and mushrikeen. Hence their fate
will be in the lowest levels of Hell, as Allah, may He be exalted, says
(interpretation of the meaning):
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِينَ فِى ٱلدَّرۡكِ
ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ وَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُمۡ نَصِيرًا (١٤٥)
“Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths
(grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them”[Holy Quran an-Nisa’
4:145].
4. But if what you meant by
hypocrites is those who fall into some acts of hypocrisy, such as lying or betraying
a trust or breaking a promise; or he fell into some kind of minor shirk, such
as showing off or swearing by something other than Allah; or who fell into some
major or minor sin – such a person does not become a kaafir just by doing that
thing. It does not put him beyond the pale of Islam and he will not spend
eternity in Hell because of it, if he dies believing in Tawheed. Rather his
case is up to Allah: if He wills He will punish him for his sin, then admit him
to Paradise because of his belief in Tawheed, or He will bestow His grace upon
him from the outset and admit him into Paradise and forgive him for the sins
that he committed. Al-Bukhaari (6933) and Muslim (1659) narrated that Abu Dharr
said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Jibreel appeared
to me at the side of the Harrah and said: ‘Give
your Ummah the glad tidings that whoever dies not associating anything with
Allah will enter Paradise.’ I said: ‘O Jibreel, even if he steals and even if
commits zina?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Even if he steals and even if commits
zina?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Even if he steals and even if he commits zina?’
He said: ‘Yes, and even if he drinks alcohol.’”
