Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu
Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no Allah but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Let us briefly establish and address who are Hypocrites (Munafiqun) And Deceitful in Islam in accordance to the Islamic concept for both male and female. Earlier in Series One we discussed briefly who are Believers (Mu'minun) in Islam
1.0 Introduction
In the beginning of the Holy Quran; Allah (SWT) divides the whole of mankind into three groups: believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites in first 20 verses of Chapter 2. Allah (SWT) describes very briefly the characteristics of the believers. Then disbelievers are mentioned in only one verse.  This description is then followed with very extensive detail of the hypocrites. Hypocrites are described at great length because they are the most dangerous members of society.  Therefore, it is necessary to understand the characteristics and fate of these hypocrites and deceitful people.
Notice that this grouping of mankind is based on beliefs and practices irrespective of color, creed, origin, language, and national or territorial affiliations.
Let us examine the characteristics of hypocrites as described in Surah al-Baqarah where Allah (SWT)says: Al-Baqarah 2:8 ‘’Among people there are those who say we believe in Allah (SWT) and the Day of Judgement, they are not believers, they are trying to cheat Allah (SWT) and the true believers. Unfortunately, they are not deceiving anyone but themselves, and they are not even aware of this.’’
Note that although they are claiming belief in Allah (SWT) and the Day of Judgment, there is no mention of belief in the prophet hood of Mohammad (SAW). This was the case of the Jews of that time.  Hence, any belief without the belief in the prophet hood of Mohammad (SAW) is unacceptable. They are so lost that they cannot even understand their own actions.  Allah (SWT) says: Al- Baqarah 2:10 ‘’In their hearts there is a disease and Allah (SWT) has increased their disease. There is a painful punishment for them because they lie.’’
Hence, lying is not an insignificant sin. It can transform a believer into a hypocrite. Allah (SWT) describes lying along with idol worshipping in the Quran: ‘’Save yourself from the evil of idol worshipping and lying.”
Allah (SWT) describes three distinct indicators of these hypocrites. Allah says: Al- Baqarah 2:11,12 ‘’When it is said to them don’t create mischief in the world, they say that we are the peace makers, in fact they are indeed the mischievous ones, but they do not perceive it. Secondly, Allah (SWT) further says: Al-Baqarah 2:13 ‘’When it is said to them believe like the other people believe they say, “Shall we believe like the foolish believe?” Verily, they are the fools, but they do not understand.
It is clear from this that the test of correct belief is to have belief as the companions of Prophet Mohammad (SAW). Allah (SWT) had so much respect for the companions of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) that He made this criteria to test the sincerity of belief. Similarly, Allah (SWT) honored the companions in an earlier verse where Allah (SWT) says that the hypocrites are trying to cheat Allah (SWT) and His believers.
Allah describes a third indicator of hypocrites as follows. Allah (SWT) says: Al-Baqarah 2:14,15,16 ‘’When they fall in with those who believe they say “We believe!”  When they go apart to their devils they declare, “Look we are with you! Verily we did but to mock (or pretend).” Allah (SWT) does mock them, and leave them to wander blindly in their rebellion. They are those who purchase error at the price of guidance. So their commerce will not prosper neither are they guided.’’
On the contrary, let us describe the fate of believing men and women on the Day of Judgment. Allah (SWT) says in Surah Al-Hadid 57: 12 ‘’ One Day shalt thou see the believing men and the believing women― how their Light runs forward before them and by their right hands: (their greeting will be): "Good News for you this Day! Gardens beneath which flow rivers! To dwell therein for aye! This is indeed the highest Achievement!" (12)’’
In contrast to all this, Allah (SWT) describes the situation of Hypocrites. Allah (SWT) says: Al-Hadid 57:13, 14, 15,’’On the Day of Judgement hypocrite men and women will say to the believers to please wait for us so that we can make use of your light.  It will be said to them go back and look for the light. A wall will be drawn between the believers and hypocrites.  Inside this wall will be the Mercy of Allah (SWT) and outside the wall will be the misery. Hypocrites will say loudly to the believers “Were we not with you?” The believers will reply, “Yes indeed, but you tempted one another, hesitated and doubted, while your vain desires charmed you till the order of Allah (SWT) arrived.  The deceiver deceived you concerning Allah (SWT):” So this day no ransom can be taken from you nor from those who disbelieved. Your home is the fire, that is the proper place for you and it is a terrible end to your journey.’’
According to Ibn-e-Kathir, all believers and hypocrites will be given guiding light on the Day of Judgement while crossing the bridge.  The light of the hypocrites will be soon extinguished.  In this way Allah (SWT) is mocking them as they used to mock Allah (SWT) and his obedient servants. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: Al-Baqarah 2:15 ‘’Allah mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doings to wonder blindly.’’
Note that the hypocrites were given some light initially, because they did some good deeds for showing off. Hence, we conclude that sincere deeds will result in a permanent guiding light and hypocrisy will be mocked at on the Day of Judgement.  Ibn Kathir has mentioned a very long Hadith in which he relates that each believer will have light according to his deeds.  Some will have light like a mountain, some like palm trees, and some in length equal to the height of a person.
Allah (SWT) further says: Al-Hadid 57:17’’Remember that Allah (SWT) makes the dead Earth alive again. Allah (SWT) in this way makes His verses clear to you so that you can understand.’’
Here Allah (SWT) is reminding us that just as He can revive the dead earth, similarly He can revive the dead hearts of the hypocrites if there is sincere repentance. I pray to Allah (SWT) that Allah (SWT) makes us sincere Muslim and provides us with guiding light permanently on the Day of Judgment.

2.0 HYPOCRITES

2.1 The Hypocrites who turned disbelievers after becoming Muslims
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:23] O People who Believe! Do not consider your fathers and your brothers as your friends if they prefer disbelief over faith; and whoever among you befriends them – then it is he who is the unjust.
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:61] And among them (the hypocrites) are those who trouble* the Herald of the Hidden (the Prophet) and say, “He is only ears**”; say “He is a listener for your good, he believes in Allah and believes in what the Muslims say, and is a mercy for the Muslims among you”; and for those who trouble the Noble Messenger of Allah, is a painful punishment. (*To disrespect / trouble the Holy Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – is blasphemy. **He believes whatever he is told.)
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:62] They swear by Allah in your presence in order to please you; whereas Allah – and His Noble Messenger – had more right that they should have pleased Him if they had faith.
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:63] Do they not know that for one who opposes Allah and His Noble Messenger, is the fire of hell, to remain in it forever? This is the greatest humiliation.
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:64] The hypocrites fear for a chapter being revealed regarding them, which may disclose what is hidden in their hearts; say, “Keep mocking; Allah will certainly disclose what you fear.”
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:65] And if you ask them, they will say, “We were just having fun and pastime”; say, “What! You mock at Allah and His verses and His Noble Messenger?”
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:66] “Do not feign excuses, you have turned disbelievers after becoming Muslims”; if We forgive some of you *, We shall punish others because they were guilty. (* One who kept quiet and later repented.)
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:67] The hypocrite men and women are all the same; enjoining wrong and forbidding right, and being tight-fisted *; they have forgotten Allah, so Allah has forsaken them; indeed the hypocrites – it is they who are really disobedient. (* Not spending in Allah’s cause)
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:68] Allah has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers, the fire of hell in which they will remain forever; that is sufficient for them; and Allah’s curse is upon them; and for them is a never ending punishment.
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:73] O Herald of the Hidden! Fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them; and their destination hell; and what an evil place to return!
[Holy Quran Chapter Taubah 9:74] And they swear by Allah that they did not say it; whereas indeed they had certainly uttered the words of disbelief, and after having entered Islam turned disbelievers and had wished for what they did not get; and what annoyed them except that Allah, and His Noble Messenger, made them prosperous with His grace? So if they repent, it is better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful punishment – in this world and the Hereafter; and they will have neither a protector nor any supporter in the entire earth.
2.2 The Punishment Of The Hypocrites In Hell:
According to the following Holy Quranic Verses, the hypocrites from among the Muslims will receive the most painful punishment in Hell.
The hypocrites are in the lowest level of the Fire. You will not find any one to help them, except those who repent and put things right and hold fast to Allah and dedicate their religion to Allah alone; they are with the believers. Allah will give the believers an immense reward. (Holy Quran Chapter 4:145-146)
"To the Hypocrites give the glad tidings that there is for them (but) a grievous penalty; (Holy Quran Chapter 4:138)"

"O Prophet! strive hard against the Unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be firm against them. Their abode is Hell, - an evil refuge indeed.  (Holy Quran Chapter 9:73)"
"And that He may punish the Hypocrites, men and women, and the Polytheists men and women, who imagine an evil opinion of Allah. On them is a round of Evil: the Wrath of Allah is on them: He has cursed them and got Hell ready for them: and evil is it for a destination.  (Holy Quran Chapter 48:6)"
"One Day will the Hypocrites- men and women - say to the Believers: "Wait for us! Let us borrow (a Light) from your Light!" It will be said: "Turn ye back to your rear! then seek a Light (where ye can)!" So a wall will be put up betwixt them, with a gate therein. Within it will be Mercy throughout, and without it, all alongside, will be (Wrath and) Punishment!  (Holy Quran Chapter 57:13)"
2.3 Some Of Those Who Pray To Allah Almighty Are Still Hypocrites
Allah Almighty said in the Holy Quranic Verse, they enjoin evil and forbid what is just.  Some of those people pray and some of their women even cover up their hairs in public.  Don't be fooled by them.  They are still hypocrites no matter how many times they pray.
They are liars and complete show-offs, who like "to be seen of men (4:142)" and "Those who (want but) to be seen (of men) (107:6).    Don't be fooled by those who pray.  Many of them might be hypocrites in the eyes of Allah Almighty:
"The Hypocrites - they think they are over-reaching Allah, but He will over-reach them: When they stand up to prayer, they stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but little do they hold Allah in remembrance;   (Holy Quran Chapter 4:142)"
2)      Many Muslims today care about their worldly pleasure.  They spend too much money in non-Islamic things and they have complete disregard to the poor.  They are very materialistic and buy too expensive (to their own budget) things.  They are complete show-offs, who like "to be seen of men (Holy Quran Chapter 4:142)" and "Those who (want but) To be seen (of men) (Holy Quran Chapter 107:6)".
"So woe to the worshipers Who are neglectful Of their Prayers, Those who (want but) To be seen (of men), But refuse (to supply) (Even) neighbourly needs.  (Holy Quran Chapter 107:4-7)"
a)      "True worship does not consist in the mere form of prayer, without the heart and mind being earnestly applied to seek the realization of the presence of Allah, and to understand and do His Holy Will."
b)      "Hypocrites make a great show of hollow acts of goodness, devotion, and charity.   But they fail signally if you test them by little acts of neighbourly help or charity, the thousand little courtesies and kindness of daily life, the supply of needs which cost little but mean much."
4)      Important Note to the Muslims who don't pray:   in the Holy Quran Chapter 107 Verses 4-7, ‘’do not at all suggest that those Muslims who don't pray out of laziness or busy schedule are hypocrites.  Yes, they will be punished for neglecting their Prayers as clearly shown in Quran Verse 107:5, but those who do pray and do the Islamic Way of ALLAH Almighty and still do evil such as showing off "to be seen of men" despite the fact that they do pray and supposedly "connect" with Allah Almighty 5 times a day, are considered hypocrites as clearly shown in Quran Verses 4:142 and 107:6.
5)      ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعۡضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡضٍ۬‌ۚ يَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمُنڪَرِ وَيَنۡہَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَيَقۡبِضُونَ أَيۡدِيَہُمۡ‌ۚ نَسُواْ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَہُمۡ‌ۗ إِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ "The Hypocrites, men and women, (have an understanding) with each other: They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close with their hands. They have forgotten Allah; so He hath forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are rebellious and perverse.  (Holy Quran Chapter 9:67)"
2.4 Many Of The Arab Bedouins Around The Prophet (SAW) Are Hypocrites
Many of those who are living fine lives yesterday and today and are forgetting about their starving Muslim brethren throughout the world are considered hypocrites in the eyes of Allah Almighty.  Not just them, but also those who kiss up to them.
"Certain of the desert Arabs round about you are hypocrites, as well as (desert Arabs) among the Medina folk: they are obstinate in hypocrisy: thou knowest them not: We know them: twice shall We punish them: and in addition shall they be sent to a grievous penalty.  (Holy Quran Chapter 9:101)"
2.5 When Muslims Are Fighting In The Way Of Allah Almighty, The Hypocrites Cowardly Sit Back And Watch
Most of the martyrs and brave fighters come from the poor villages and under developed cities.  Very rarely do you find martyr from a more advanced and developed city, especially a city where Muslim and Christian reside.
"And the Hypocrites also. These were told: 'Come, fight in the way of Allah, or (at least) drive (The foe from your city).' They said: 'Had we known how to fight, we should certainly have followed you.' They were that day nearer to Unbelief than to Faith, saying with their lips what was not in their hearts but Allah hath full knowledge of all they conceal.  (Holy Quran Chapter 3:167)"
2.6 The Hypocrites Ally Themselves with the Enemy against The Muslims
What the hypocrites from the Muslim governments and their police men and national supporters of today are doing to the Islamic organizations from the torture and imprisonment for the sake of the Western World is clearly despicable.
"Hast thou not observed the Hypocrites say to their misbelieving brethren among the People of the Book? - "If ye are expelled, we too will go out with you, and we will never hearken to any one in your affair; and if ye are attacked (in fight) we will help you". But Allah is witness that they are indeed liars.   (Holy Quran Chapter 59:11)"
"Yea, to those who take for friends unbelievers rather than believers: is it honour they seek among them? Nay, - all honour is with Allah.  (Holy Quran Chapter 4:139)"
2.7 Watch Out From Those Who Question the Existence Of Allah Almighty And The Vain Talkers
According to the Holy Quranic Verses, any vain talk or foul language are prohibited.  Muslims must always stay away from vain talkers.   Those who participate with them will be from among them, and will face a great punishment. Of the hypocrite are those who question the existence of Allah Almighty and criticize Islam inappropriately especially when they are sad or mad.
Muslims must stay away from them, because they are hypocrites:
"And behold! The Hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease (even) say: 'Allah and His Apostle promised us nothing but delusion!'  (Holy Quran Chapter 33:12)"
"Already has He sent you Word in the Book, that when ye hear the signs of Allah held in defiance and ridicule, ye are not to sit with them unless they turn to a different theme: if ye did, ye would be like them. For Allah will collect the hypocrites and those who defy faith - all in Hell:-  (Holy Quran Chapter 4:140)"
1)      According to the Noble Verses above, any Muslim who questions the existence of Allah Almighty and criticizes the Truth of Islam after the Truth was made clear to them is a hypocrite.  Any Muslim who talks rude or in foul language about Islam and Allah Almighty is a hypocrite.  Any Muslim who continues his friendship with such person is like him.  He becomes a hypocrite.
2)      Now there are those who are constantly seeking the Truth and would challenge any Islamic and non-Islamic claim if it appeared to be questionable.  Those Muslims are not hypocrites.  They are Truth seekers and scholars too.  You know them from their open minds and politeness.
c)     Muslims are commanded to stay away from vain talkers:
"When thou seest men engaged in vain discourse about Our signs, turn away from them unless they turn to a different theme. If Satan ever makes thee forget, then after recollection, sit not thou in the company of those who do wrong.  (The Holy Quran, 6:68)"
"Who avoid vain talk;  (Holy Quran Chapter 23:3)"
"And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say: 'To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you: we seek not the ignorant.'  (Holy Quran Chapter 28:55)"
"So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!-  (Holy Quran Chapter 70:42)"
"(The sinners will say :) 'But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;' (Holy Quran Chapter 74:45)"
2.8 Some Hypocrites Might Receive Forgiveness from Allah Almighty
The Muslim hypocrites who desert their Muslim brothers and sisters in their worst needs, especially at war time.  Allah Almighty knows that not all of the hypocrites might be the same.  Some MIGHT (not necessarily) be forgiven by Him, depending on what their intentions and situation was at that time.
Some people, although they are hypocrites in the eyes of Allah Almighty, will receive forgiveness, because Allah Almighty is Oft-Forgiving and Most Merciful.  Those people are the least of the hypocrites:
"That Allah may reward the men of Truth for their Truth, and punish the Hypocrites if that be His Will, or turn to them in Mercy: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.  (Holy Quran Chapter 33:24)" Allah Almighty will determine the forgiveness to some of the hypocrites due to their intentions and repentance in life; and their actions toward Allah Almighty and the amount of damage they caused their fellow Muslims. Allah Knows best.
Muslims who abuse the wealth that Allah Almighty gave them in life, and show off too much to their Muslim brothers and sisters, especially the needy ones are indeed considered hypocrites in the eyes of Allah Almighty.  But not every "show-off" hypocrite is the same.  Some are worse than others.
b)      Muslims cannot make the determination.  Only Allah Almighty can:
       i.          فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرً۬ا يَرَهُ ۥ (٧) وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ۬ شَرًّ۬ا يَرَهُ ۥ "Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it!  And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it.  (Holy Quran Chapter 99:7-8)"
      ii.
"And Allah most certainly knows those who believe, and as certainly those who are Hypocrites.  (The Holy Quran Chapter 29:11)"

2.9 If the Current Muslim Nations Are Too Corrupt, Know That Allah Almighty Will Substitute Them with Better Ones
Allah Almighty has no tolerance for corruption which includes sinning and hypocrisy in Islam. This is Islam that we truly love and adore.  It is the complete System of Allah (SWT) that has the answers for everything and every issue and every problem that people face:
"Behold, ye are those Invited to spend (Of your substance) In the Way of Allah:  But among you are some That are niggardly.  But any Who are niggardly are so At the expense of Their own souls.  But Allah is free Of all wants, And it is ye that are needy.  If ye turn back (From the Path), He will Substitute in your stead Another people; then they Would not be like you!   (The Holy Quran Chapter 47:38)"
As long as the Muslims tolerate dictatorships and hypocritical life in their countries, Allah Almighty will never be satisfied with us, and He might ultimately substitute us with other better nations who are more straight forward and sincere.
b)      As Allah Almighty praised them in the Holy Quran:
"Strongest among men in enmity to the believers (Muslims) wilt thou find the Jews and Pagans; and nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, 'We are Christians': because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant.  (The Holy Quran Chapter 5:82)" Yes, they indeed have renounced the world and they are truly not arrogant!
c)      It's ironic that the Western people are living what Islam taught 1400 years ago (except for their ridiculous open sexuality, which by the way the religious people among them avoid), and the Muslims aren't living what Islam teaches! As long as we Muslims don't change ourselves, and insist on being hypocrites, then Allah Almighty will never help to change us:
"Because Allah will never change the grace which He hath bestowed on a people until they change what is in their (own) souls: and verily Allah is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things).  (The Holy Quran, 8:53)"
"This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear Allah;  (The Holy Quran Chapter 2:2)"
3.0 Deceitful People
They think they deceive Allah and those who believe. They deceive no one but themselves but they are not aware of it. (Holy Quran Chapter 2:9)
Do not be deceived by the fact that those who disbelieve move freely about the earth. (Holy Quran Chapter 3:196)
The hypocrites think they deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. When they get up to pray, they get up lazily, showing off to people, and only remembering Allah a very little. (Holy Quran Chapter 4:142)
If they intend to deceive you, Allah is enough for you. It is He Who supported you with His help and with the believers. (Holy Quran Chapter 8:62)
On the Day the Last Hour arrives, the evildoers will swear they have not even tarried for an hour. That is the extent to which they are deceived. (Holy Quran Chapter 30:55)
No one disputes Allah's Signs except those who disbelieve. Do not let their free movement about the earth deceive you. (Holy Quran Chapter 40:4)

4.0 Who Are the Hypocrite People
When the hypocrites and people with sickness in their hearts said, 'What Allah and His Messenger promised us was mere delusion.' (Holy Quran Chapter 33:12)
So that Allah might recompense the truthful for their truth and punish the hypocrites, if He wills, or turn towards them. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:24)
What assailed you on the day the two armies met was by Allah's permission, so that He would know the believers, and so that He would know the hypocrites. They were told, 'Come and fight in the Way of Allah or at least help defend us.' They said, 'If we knew how to fight, we would certainly follow you.' * They were closer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah knows best what they are hiding. They are those who said of their brothers, when they themselves had stayed behind, 'If they had only obeyed us, they would not have been killed.' Say, 'Then ward off death from yourselves if you are telling the truth.' (Holy Quran Chapter 3:166-168)
4)      This was so that Allah might punish the men and women of the hypocrites, and the men and women of the idolaters, and turn towards the men and women of the believers. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:73)
They say, 'If we return to Madina, the mightier will drive out the inferior.' But all might belongs to Allah and to His Messenger and the believers. But the hypocrites do not know this. (Holy Quran Chapter 63:8)
They (hypocrites) will call out to them (the believers), 'Were we not with you?' They will reply, 'Indeed you were. But you made trouble for yourselves and hung back and doubted and false hopes deluded you until Allah's command arrived. The Deluder deluded you about Allah.' (Holy Quran Chapter 57:14)
And when the hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, 'These people have been deluded by their religion.' But those who put their trust in Allah will find Allah to be Almighty, All-Wise. (8:49)
(Allah Said To Satan,) 'Stir Up Any Of Them You Can With Your Voice And Rally Against Them Your Cavalry And Your Infantry And Share With Them In Their Children And Their Wealth And Make Them Promises! The Promise Of Satan Is Nothing But Delusion.' (Holy Quran Chapter 17:64)
Mankind! Have fear of your Lord and fear a day when no father will be able to atone for his son, or son for his father, in any way. Allah's promise is true. So do not let the life of this world delude you and do not let the Deluder delude you concerning Allah. (Holy Quran Chapter 31:33)
It is We Who give life and cause to die and We are their final destination. (Holy Quran Chapter 50:43)
(Believers will say to the hypocrites,) 'So today no ransom will be accepted from you or from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire. It is your master. What an evil destination!' (Holy Quran Chapter 57:15)
O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and hypocrites and be harsh with them. Their refuge is Hell. What an evil destination! (Holy Quran Chapter 66:9)
O Prophet! Have fear of Allah and do not obey the disbelievers and hypocrites. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:1)
... We made a binding covenant with them (the Prophets), so that He would be able to question the truthful about their truth; and He has prepared a painful punishment for the disbelievers. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:7-8)
Do not obey the disbelievers and hypocrites and disregard their abuse of you. Put your trust in Allah. Allah suffices as a Protector. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:48)
You are a greater cause of terror in their breasts than Allah! That is because they (the hypocrites) are people who do not understand. (Holy Quran Chapter 59:13)
What assailed you on the day the two armies met was by Allah's permission, so that He would know the believers, and so that He would know the hypocrites. They were told, 'Come and fight in the Way of Allah or at least help defend us.' They said, 'If we knew how to fight, we would certainly follow you.' They were closer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah knows best what they are hiding. (Holy Quran Chapter 3:166-167)
If the hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts and the rumour-mongers in Madina do not desist, We will set you onto them. Then they will only be your neighbours there a very short time. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:60)
They (the hypocrites) will not fight against you all together as a group except in fortified towns or behind high walls. Their hostility towards each other is intense. They are full of bravado in each other's company. You consider them united but their hearts are scattered wide. That is because they are people who do not use their intellect. (Holy Quran Chapter 59:14)
If they incline to peace, you too incline to it, and put your trust in Allah. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (Holy Quran Chapter 8:61)
Putting Things Right: When they (hypocrites) are told, 'Do not cause corruption on the earth,' they say, 'We are only putting things right.' (Holy Quran Chapter 2:11)
That is because they have believed and then returned to disbelief. So their hearts have been sealed up and they cannot understand. (Holy Quran Chapter 63:3)
They are the people who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, so that they may go away.' The treasuries of the heavens and earth belong to Allah. But the hypocrites do not understand this. (Holy Quran Chapter 63:7)
When the hypocrites and people with sickness in their hearts said, 'What Allah and His Messenger promised us was mere delusion.' and a group of them said, 'People of Yathrib, Your position is untenable so return!', some of them asked the Prophet to excuse them, saying, 'Our houses are exposed,' when they were not exposed; it was merely that they wanted to run away. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:12-13)
Wives of the Prophet! You are not like other women provided you guard against evil. Do not be too soft-spoken in your speech lest someone with sickness in his heart becomes desirous. Speak correct and courteous words. (Holy Quran Chapter 33:32)
When the hypocrites come to you they say, 'We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.' Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are certainly liars. (Holy Quran Chapter 63:1)
(It is) so that He may admit the men and women of the believers into Gardens with rivers flowing under them, remaining in them timelessly, forever, and erase their bad actions from them; and in Allah's sight that is a mighty victory. And so that He might punish the men and women of the hypocrites and the men and women of the idolaters-those who think bad thoughts about Allah. They will suffer an evil turn of fate. Allah is angry with them, and has cursed them and prepared Hell for them. What an evil destination! (Holy Quran Chapter 48:5-6)
5.0 Question and Answer Session
Who are the hypocrites of Islam[1]?
Question: The hypocrites of Islam will be in the lowest level of Hell and are talked about many time in the Holy Quran.
I am just a little confused...what exactly are the actions of these hypocrites? Who are they?
Quranic verses/ Hadiths would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: There is a Hadith that says: the signs of a hypocrite are three: if he speaks, he lies; if he promises, he does not fulfil; and if he was entrusted, he betrays.

The definition of a munaafiq (hypocrite) is that he is a person that pretends to be Muslim but in his heart he is not and he does not believe. Hence, you can never really know who is a munaafiq because it's about what is in his heart rather than what he says.
In another Hadith, the Prophet SAW said:
"Four characteristics are such that the one who has all the four, is a hypocrite through and through, and the one who has one of these, has one characteristic of hypocrisy in him until he gives it up: that when he is entrusted with something, he proves dishonest; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he quarrels he crosses all limits of morality and decency." (Bukhari, Muslim).
The jurists of Islam[2] have almost unanimously held the view that if a person makes a pledge to AIlah (e.g.. vows to do something), or enters an agreement with others, or promised somebody to do something, it is obligatory for him to fulfill it, unless the thing he has promised is by itself sinful. If it is sinful, he should not observe or carry out the agreement or promise, but should expiate its violation as is also mentioned in Surah AI-Ma’idah[3]. (AI-Jassas and Ibn al’Arabi, Ahkam al-Qur-an an).
6.0 What are The Signs of a Hypocrite people in Islam
6.1 Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (RA) says that Rasulullah (SAW) said: “Four traits whoever possesses them is a hypocrite and whoever possesses some of them has an element of hypocrisy until he leaves it: the one who when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks his promise, when he disputes he transgresses and when he makes an agreement[4] he violates it.” (Muslim and Bukhari). Other wordings of this same hadith:
a)      “The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks his promise and when he is entrusted he betrays the trust.” (Bukhari and Muslim) “…even if he prays and fasts and imagines that he is a Muslim.” (Muslim)
b)      Nifaq (hypocrisy): in the Arabic language means the general category of deception, scheming and presenting an outward appearance of good while concealing its opposite.
c)      In the Shari ‘a, nifaq is of two types:
a) Greater (An-Nifaq Al-Akbar): To present an outward appearance of belief in Allah, his Angels, his books, his messengers, the last day, etc. while concealing within that which negates all or some of that. This is the hypocrisy which Rasulullah (SAW) confronted during his life and the ones who Allah said in the Qur’an that they are in “the lowest depth of hell-fire”.
b) Lesser (An-Nifaq Al-Asghar) or hypocrisy of action: To present an outward appearance of good and good deeds while concealing within that which negates that. This form of hypocrisy is built on the 5 things mentioned in the hadith at hand.
d)      The actions in this hadith are all part of lesser hypocrisy: One who has these character traits in interaction with other people is most likely to have them with regard to Allah and his Prophet’s (AS’s). That is why the existence of them is a ‘sign’ of the existence of greater nifaq.
e)      Lying. Al-Hassan Al-Basri said: “Nifaq is the difference between the inner and the appearance, between statement and action and between entering and leaving and it used to be said that the foundation of nifaq upon which it is built is lying.”
f)       Breaking Promises. This falls into two categories:
a) Making a promise with no intention of keeping it. Al-Awaa’il said that one who says “I will do such-and-such Inshallah” without intending to do it has committed both lying and breaking a promise.
b) Making a promise intending to keep it and then later deciding to break it.
6.2 Transgression in Dispute:
1)      The main meaning of ‘transgression’ here is to intentionally speak other than truth making truth falsehood and vice versa. Lying “calls to” this as in the hadith: “Beware of lying for lying guides to transgression and transgression leads to the fire.”  (Bukhari, Muslim). Rasulullah (SAW) said: “The most hated of men to Allah is the one given to fierce and violent disputation.” (Bukhari, Muslim) Rasulullah (SAW)) said about the one who takes what is not his through clever speech has only been given a piece of the fire.
Breaking Agreements. Allah said:“And fulfill your agreements for verily agreements will be asked about.”(Surah Al-Isrâ 17: 34)
Allah says: “And fulfill Allah’s agreement when you have made an agreement and don’t violate your oaths after they have been established and you have made Allah your guardian (therein).” (Surah An-Nahl 16: 91)
6.3 The Most Serious Oath To Dishonor Is The Oath Of Allegiance To The Khalifah Of The Muslims.
a)      Betraying of Trusts: When a Muslim is entrusted with something, he must do his best to protect it. Allah said:
“O ye that believe! Betray not the trust of Allah and the Messenger, nor misappropriate knowingly things entrusted to you.” (Surah Al-Anfaal 8: 27)
These issues have all been connected to hypocrisy in the Qur’an: Holy Quran Surah Al-Munaafiqoon 63: 1-2 (Lying, breaking oaths)
b)      “When the Hypocrites come to thee, they say, “We bear witness that thou art indeed the Messenger of Allah.” Yea, Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His Messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the Hypocrites are indeed liars. They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah. Truly evil are their deeds.”
Holy Quran Surah At-Taubah 9: 73-77 (False oaths, breaking promises (to Allah), lying)
c)      O Prophet! Strive hard against the unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be firm against them. Their abode is Hell,- an evil refuge indeed. They swear by Allah that they said nothing (evil), but indeed they uttered blasphemy, and they did it after accepting Islam; and they meditated a plot which they were unable to carry out: this revenge of theirs was (their) only return for the bounty with which Allah and His Messenger had enriched them! If they repent, it will be best for them; but if they turn back (to their evil ways), Allah will punish them with a grievous penalty in this life and in the Hereafter: They shall have none on earth to protect or help them. Amongst them are men who made a covenant with Allah, that if He bestowed on them of His bounty, they would give (largely) in charity, and be truly amongst those who are righteous But when He did bestow of His bounty, they became covetous, and turned back (from their covenant), averse (from its fulfillment). So He hath put as a consequence hypocrisy into their hearts, (to last) till the Day, whereon they shall meet Him: because they broke their covenant with Allah, and because they lied (again and again).”
d)      Surah Al-Ahzaab 33: 72-73 (Betraying trusts)“We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains; but they refused to undertake it, being afraid thereof: but man undertook it, He was indeed unjust and foolish, (With the result) that Allah has to punish the Hypocrites, men and women, and the Unbelievers, men and women, and Allah turns in Mercy to the Believers, men and women: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
e)      Umar (RA) mentioned Rasulullah (SAW) saying: “The thing from which I fear for you the most is the knowledgeable hypocrite.” Umar (RA) was then asked: “How can a hypocrite be knowledgeable?” Umar (RA) answered: “He speaks with wisdom but acts with injustice.”
f)       Ibn Umar was told: “We enter the presence of the ruler we speak to him other than what we say after we leave.” Ibn Umar said: “We used to consider that hypocrisy.” (Bukhari)
13) Ibn Abi Malaika said: “I encountered thirty Companions of Rasulullah (SAW)) every one of them fears hypocrisy for himself and Al-Hassan Al-Basri used to say about it: “No one fears it but a believer and no one feels safe from it but a hypocrite.” (Bukhari)
6.4 Another Aspect of Hypocrisy:  To Do Apparently Good Deeds With Wicked Intentions
a)      Allah said:
“They set up a Masjid for the purpose of harm, Kufr, creating division among the Muslims and as an outpost for those making war against Allah and His Prophet before this and they will swear “We only intended good.” And Allah bears witness that they are liars.” (Surah Taubah 9:107)
b)      Allah says:
“Do not imagine that those who are joyful with what they have done and love to be praised for that which they did not do – do not imagine them to be safe from punishment – and theirs is a painful punishment.”  (Surah al-Imraan 3:188)
7.0 Muslims Be Careful From the Hypocrites[5]
It is important for every Muslim to know that Allah Almighty in the Holy Quran warned us from the hypocrites.  Not everyone who claims to be a Muslim is one.   Muslims must stay away from the hypocrites and never listen to them:
Fear Allah, and hearken not to the Unbelievers and the Hypocrites: verily Allah is full of Knowledge and Wisdom.   (Holy Quran Chapter 33:1)"

8.0 Conclusion
8.1 The apparent Signs of a Hypocrite include:
O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with[6] Allah (SWT) that you say that which you do not do.   [Quran (Surah As-Saff: 2-3)]
In explanation of these verses Sheikh Moududi states:
One meaning of these verses is that there should be complete agreement between a true Muslim’s word and deed: he should carry into effect whatever he says, and when he has no intention of doing it, or has no power for it, he should not say it. To say one thing and do another is one of the most hideous characteristics of man, in the sight of Allah. The Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah’s peace) has explained that a person’s being characterized by this quality is a sign that he is not a believer but a hypocrite. According to a Hadith the Prophet SAW said; "The hypocrite has three signs even if he offered the Prayer and observed the Fast, and professed to be a Muslim: That then he spoke he lied; when he made a promise, he broke it; and when he was entrusted with something, he proved dishonest.” (Bukhari, Muslim).
8.2 True Muslims and believers should be careful from the Hypocrites in the following aspects
1)      Read the Book of Allah; Quran and would know that the punishment of the hypocrites is in Hell.
2)      You should know that some of those who pray to Allah Almighty openly are hypocrites.
3)      Reading from the Quran; many of the resourceful people are hypocrites.
4)      When Muslims are fighting in the way of Allah Almighty, the hypocrites cowardly sit back and watch.
5)      The hypocrites ally themselves with the enemy against the Muslims and that’s is exactly what is happening now.
6)      True Muslims should Watch out from those who question the existence of Allah Almighty and from their vain talkers.
7)      Allah SWT is Most forgiving and thus Some hypocrites might receive forgiveness from Allah Almighty through His Mercy.
8)      If the current Muslim nations are too corrupt; then Allah Almighty will substitute them with better ones.
Allahu alamu – Allah knows best
