Wednesday 9 Ramadan 1442 AH and 21 April 2021 CE

Reminder Day 9

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum WA-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu.

Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad () is His slave and Messenger.

The Prophet () said: “A person who leads others to doing what is good will earn the same reward as those who do it.” (Muslim, 1893)

“Do not lose hope, nor be sad. You will surely be victorious if you are true in Faith.” And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].” [Holy Quran Chapter Al Imran Ayah 139]

“If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely.”

[Holy Quran Chapter Imran Ayah 160]

Preamble

The month of Ramadan has come to you, the month of repentance and forgiveness, the month of doubling the rewards of deeds, and the month when sins are wiped out, so be diligent in acts of obedience and hasten to rewards.

Dear brother and sister, has the time not come for you to quit your desire? Has the time not come for you to return to the gate of your Lord? Have you forgotten what He granted you and bestowed upon you? Is it not He Who created and perfectly fashioned you? Is it not He Who gathered hearts around you and nurtured you with His sustenance? Is it not He Who inspired you with Islam and guided you? Raise your hands humbly to your Patron, stand at His gates, and seek His protection for He receives whoever stands at His gate, protects whoever seeks His protection, and suffices whoever relies upon Him. Thus, hasten to repentance before meeting Him so that you may attain acceptance.

Siyaam in Arabic means abstaining; in Islam it means abstaining from things that break the fast, from dawn until sunset, having first made the intention (niyyah) to fast.

The Pillars Of Fasting:

There are four pillars of fasting; namely:

1- Intention.

2- Abstention from whatever invalidates one's fast (such as food, drink, and the like).

3- The time (from the rise of true dawn until sunset).

4- The fasting person (a Muslim who is an adult in full possession of mental faculties and capable of fasting. That is to say, free from being prevented like in the case of the one traveling, the sick person, and women experiencing menstruation and post-partum bleeding).

The school of fasting:

Fasting is among the greatest things that help in combating desires, suppressing lusts, purifying souls, and stopping them at the boundaries set by Allah Almighty. The fasting person prevents his tongue from engaging in idle speech, abuse, defaming people, and spreading harmful backbiting and tale bearing. Fasting prevents the fasting person from cheating, deceit, giving less than due, guile, committing immorality, usury, bribery, and unjustly consuming the money of people through any kind of fraud. It causes a Muslim to hasten to do good deeds, like establishing the prayers and paying zakah in the correct manner and to the recipients specified by the sharia. He should be diligent in offering charity and engaging in beneficial projects. Fasting drives a fasting person to earn his living in a lawful manner and to avoid committing sins and immorality.

Ruling on fasting

Fasting is one of the great pillars of Islam and it is an indisputably established fact of the religion. This was indicated by the Quran, the Sunnah, and the consensus (of the Muslims). Many narrations were reported about its virtue. There is no doubt that this honorable act of worship has some conditions, pillars, obligations and recommendations that Allah, the Exalted, enjoined. There are also invalidators and forbidden and reprehensible acts in fasting that Allah Almighty prohibited. Fasting has different benefits and many heart-related facts. This is why a Muslim should know these matters to worship his Lord with insight and for this act of worship to be accepted and rewarded with an ample reward.

The Ummah is agreed that fasting the month of Ramadaan is obligatory, the evidence for which is in the Qur’aan and Sunnah. Allaah says: “O you who believe! Observing al-sawn (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become al-muttaqoon (the pious).” [Quran al-Baqarah 2:183].

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Islam is built on five [pillars]…” among which he mentioned fasting in Ramadaan. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 1/49). Whoever breaks the fast during Ramadaan without a legitimate excuse has committed a serious major sin, The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, describing a dream that he had seen: “… until I was at the mountain, where I heard loud voices. I asked, ‘What are these voices?’ They said, ‘This is the howling of the people of Hellfire.’ Then I was taken [to another place], and I saw people hanging from their hamstrings, with the corners of their mouths torn and dripping with blood. I said, ‘Who are these?’ They said, ‘The people who broke their fast before it was the proper time to do so,’ i.e., before the time of iftaar.” (Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/420).

Al-Haafiz al-Dhahabi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, “Among the believers it is well-established that whoever does not fast in Ramadaan without a valid excuse is worse than an adulterer or drunkard; they doubt whether he is even a Muslim at all, and they regard him as a heretic and profligate.” Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “If a person does not fast in Ramadaan knowing that it is haraam but making it halaal for himself to do so, kill him; and if he does it because he is immoral [but believes it is haraam], then punish him for not fasting.”(Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 25/265).

The Virtues Of The Month Of Ramadan Include:

Allah Almighty says (what means): {O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.} [Quran 2:183].

The Prophet ()said: Allah Almighty says: "All the deeds of the children of Adam are for him except fasting, which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it." Fasting is a shield (from the Hellfire and from committing sins). If one of you is fasting, he should avoid having sexual relations with his wife and quarreling. If somebody fights or quarrels with him, he should say: "I am fasting." By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person; one at the time of breaking his fast and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. Then, he will be pleased because of his fasting. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The Messenger of Allah ()also said: There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyaan. Those who fast will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection, and none except them will enter through it. It will be said: "Where are those who used to observe fasts?" They will get up and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The Prophet() said: "Whoever fasts in Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain the reward of Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

He() also said: Fasting and the Quran intercede for a man. Fasting says: "O my Lord, I have kept him away from his food and his passions by day, so accept my intercession for him." The Quran says: "I have kept him away from sleep by night, so accept my intercession for him." Then their intercession is accepted. [Ahmad and others; Al-Haythami: good; Al-Albani: authentic]

The virtues of fasting are great indeed, and one of the things reported in the saheeh ahaadeeth is that Allaah has chosen fasting for Himself, and He will reward it and multiply the reward without measure, as He says [in the hadeeth qudsi]: “Except for fasting which is only for My sake, and I will reward him for it.” (al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, no. 1904; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/407). Fasting has no equal (al-Nisaa'i, 4/165; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/413), and the du’aa’ of the fasting person will not be refused (reported by al-Bayhaqi, 3/345; al-Silsilat al-Saheeh, 1797). The fasting person has two moments of joy: one when he breaks his fast and one when he meets his Lord and rejoices over his fasting (reported by Muslim, 2/807). Fasting will intercede for a person on the Day of Judgement, and will say, “O Lord, I prevented him from his food and physical desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.” (Reported by Ahmad, 2/174.

Al-Haythami classed its isnaad as hasan in al-Majma’, 3/181. See also Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/411). The smell that comes from the mouth of a fasting person is better with Allaah than the scent of musk. (Muslim, 2/807). Fasting is a protection and a strong fortress that keeps a person safe from the Fire. (Reported by Ahmad, 2/402; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/411; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 3880). Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will remove his face seventy years’ distance from the Fire. (Reported by Muslim, 2/808). Whoever fasts one day seeking the pleasure of Allaah, if that is the last day of his life, he will enter Paradise. (Reported by Ahmad, 5/391; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/412). In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyaan, through those who fast will enter, and no one will enter it except them; when they have entered it will be locked, and no-one else will enter through it.”(al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 1797).

Ramadaan is a pillar of Islam; the Qur’aan was revealed in this month, and in it there is a night that is better than a thousand months. “When Ramadaan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, no. 3277). Fasting Ramadaan is equivalent to fasting ten months (See Musnad Ahmad, 5/280; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/421). “Whoever fasts Ramadaan out of faith and with the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 37). At the breaking of every fast, Allaah will choose people to free from Hellfire. (Reported by Ahmad, 5/256; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/419).

There is much wisdom and many benefits in fasting, which have to do with the taqwa mentioned by Allaah in the aayah “… that you may become al-muttaqoon (the pious).” [Quran al-Baqarah 2:183]

The interpretation of this is that if a person refrains from halaal things hoping to earn the pleasure of Allaah and out of fear of His punishment, it will be easier for him to refrain from doing haraam things.

If a person’s stomach is hungry, this will keep many of his other faculties from feeling hunger or desires; but if his stomach is satisfied, his tongue, eye, hand and private parts will start to feel hungry. Fasting leads to the defeat of Shaytaan; it controls desires and protects one’s faculties.

When the fasting person feels the pangs of hunger, he experiences how the poor feel, so he has compassion towards them and gives them something to ward off their hunger. Hearing about them is not the same as sharing their suffering, just as a rider does not understand the hardship of walking unless he gets down and walks.

Fasting trains the will to avoid desires and keep away from sin; it helps a person to overcome his own nature and to wean himself away from his habits. It also trains a person to get used to being organized and punctual, which will solve the problem that many people have of being disorganized, if only they realized.

Fasting is also a demonstration of the unity of the Muslims, as the ummah fasts and breaks its fast at the same time.

Fasting also provides a great opportunity for those who are calling others to Allaah. In this month many people come to the mosque who are coming for the first time, or who have not been to the mosque for a long time, and their hearts are open, so we must make the most of this opportunity by preaching in a gentle manner, teaching appropriate lessons and speaking beneficial words, whilst co-operating in righteousness and good deeds. The dai’yah should not be so preoccupied with others that he forgets his own soul and becomes like a wick that lights the way for others while it is itself consumed.

Finally The benefits of fasting include:

a- Spiritual benefits:

1- It instills the inclination to piety, which is one of the greatest secrets of fasting, in the soul.

2- It trains one to be patient and strengthens one's determination.

3- It trains one on self-restraint.

4- It humbles the self. Satisfaction with food and drink and having sexual intercourse with women leads the self to insolence, arrogance, and heedlessness.

5- It helps in freeing the heart for contemplation and the remembrance of Allah Almighty. Fulfilling desires may harden and blind the heart, prevent it from meditation and mentioning Allah Almighty, and entail heedlessness. The emptiness of the stomach from food enlightens and softens the heart, removes its hardness, and prepares it for the remembrance of Allah Almighty and contemplation.

6- It narrows the channels of the blood, where Satan, the sneaking whisperer, moves within the children of Adam, may Allah exalt his mention. Satan circulates in the human being as blood circulates in the body. Through fasting, the whispers of Satan get quieter, and the power of desire and anger fade away.

b- Social benefits:

1- It trains Muslims on order and unity.

2- It spreads justice and equality among Muslims.

3- It develops mercy in the believers and fosters good behavior.

4- It makes the rich realize the value of the favors that Allah, the Exalted, bestowed upon them, of which He deprived many of the poor, like abundant food, drink, clothes and marriage. By refraining from these pleasures for a certain time and experiencing hardship, one remembers what other people are totally deprived from. This necessarily results in thanking Allah Almighty for the blessing of richness. It also urges him to help his poor brothers and sisters.

5- It preserves society from evils and corruption.

c- Health benefits:

1- It purifies the intestines.

2- It reforms the stomach.

3- It cleanses the body of wastes and deposits.

4- It alleviates the intensity of obesity and the fullness of the stomach with fats.

The Forbidden And Disliked Matters Of Fasting:

- The forbidden matters of fasting:

These are matters that are forbidden outside Ramadan and whose forbiddance is even stronger due to the honor of the time and the virtue of the month of Ramadan. These include lying, backbiting, tale bearing, obscene speech, watching indecent programs and movies, listening to songs and other matters. The Prophet() said: "Whoever does not give up false speech, acting upon it, and ignorant behavior, Allah has no need of him giving up his food and drink." [Al-Bukhari]

Disliked Matters In Fasting:

1- Excessively rinsing the mouth and sniffing (water) in the nose.

2- Tasting food without a need.

3- Gathering one's saliva and swallowing it.

4- Chewing gum that does not disintegrate (if it disintegrates, it invalidates fasting.)

5- Kissing for those whose desire is moved by it.

6- Leaving remnants of food between one's teeth.

7- Smelling what might go into the mouth, like powders of musk and incense.

8- Continuing to fast for two days or more without eating in between them.

Acts From The Sunnah In Fasting:

It is recommended for the fasting person to do the following acts:

1- Frequently reading the Glorious Quran with humble submission and contemplation.

2- Frequently remembering Allah Almighty.

3- Frequently giving charity.

4- Preventing the tongue and organs of the body from excessive words and acts that include no sins.

5- Hastening the iftaar (i.e. meal with which one breaks the fast).

6- Breaking the fast with an odd number of ripe, fresh dates or small dates. Otherwise, with water.

7- Supplicating Allah Almighty upon breaking one's fast.

8- Having suhoor (i.e. predawn meal) and delaying it till directly before the azan of Al-Fajr.

9- Offering iftaar to fasting people.

10- Observing iʻtikaaf (i.e. religious seclusion in the masjid) in the last ten days.

11- Performing qiyaam (i.e. night prayers) in the nights of Ramadan, especially in the night of Al-Qadr (i.e. The Night of Decree).

Heart-Related Facts Of Fasting:

These are six issues:

1- Lowering the gaze and preventing one’s eyesight from freely looking at whatever is dispraised and disliked and whatever engages the heart and distracts from remembering Allah Almighty.

2- Preventing the tongue from engaging in idle talk, lying, backbiting, tale bearing, obscene and harsh speech, quarrelling, and useless arguments.

3- Preventing one’s hearing from listening to all what is disliked because whatever is forbidden to be said is forbidden to be heard. That is why Allah Almighty associated between listening to falsehood and consuming what is unlawful. Allah, the Exalted, says (what means): {[They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful.} [Quran 5:42]

4- Preventing other organs of the body like the hands and the legs from engaging in sins and disliked acts and refraining from eating any suspicious food at iftaar. It is inappropriate for a Muslim to abstain from eating lawful food and then break his fast with unlawful food.

The Prophet ()said: "Perhaps a fasting person might obtain nothing from his fast except hunger." [Al-Albani: authentic]

5- One should not eat so much lawful food at the time of iftaar that his stomach gets full. The worst vessel a man can fill is his stomach, filled with lawful food.

6- After breaking his fast, his heart should be wavering between fear and hope as he does not know whether his fast was accepted. Will he be among those who are brought near to Allah Almighty or those who are rejected? Thus, would he be among the disliked? This should be his state after every act of worship.

The Invalidators Of Fasting:

Fasting is invalidated if certain matters take place during the daytime in Ramadan:

1- Deliberately eating and drinking.

2- Sexual intercourse.

3- Ejaculation of semen willingly.

4- Cupping.

5- Intentional vomiting.

6- Menstruation and post-partum bleeding.

7- Whatever performs the same functions of eating and drinking like a nutritious injection?

In conclusion, we ask Allah Almighty to accept our fasting, qiyaam (voluntary night prayer), and righteous deeds. He is All-Hearing and Responsive.
