Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu. Amma ba’d.

Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (Sal Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is His slave and Messenger.

THE POOR BELIEVERS’ GIVING SADAQA

It was narrated that Abu Masud (radi Allahu anhu) said: “The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) used to enjoin charity, then one of us would go out and carry goods for others until he had earned a Mudd, but one of them nowadays has one hundred thousand (Dinar or Dirham).” Shaqiq said: “It was as if he was hinting that this was he himself.” [Sunan Ibn Majah]

COMMENTARY

This narration tells us that the Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) used to encourage his Companions to give Sadaqa even though they were poor. So the Sahabah would do whatever work they could find and donate their earnings as Sadaqah. The narrator Abu Masud (radi Allahu anhu) was one such person. The reward for spending in the Path of Allah was granted to him in this life as well and he later became very wealthy. May Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) preserve his reward of the Akhirah too. Ameen.

Abu Masud (radi Allahu anhu) narrated the case but did not mention that it was his story in order to avoid showing off. His intention was only to incite others to do good deeds. This shows the sincerity of the Companions of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam).

PARABLE WITH NIGERIA MASJID SADAQAT SYSTEM

Do you know that in Nigerian Masjid; well to do people give charity as low as N50, N100, etc. or minimum currency when they have reasonable amount in both their pockets and at home?

The middle/low level Masjid ask for sadaqat or charity through baskets going round after Fard Sallah might not have reasonable amount after collections to maintain upkeep requirements where Smallest of such values are given by petty traders or shoe shiners or Okada (motorcycle) riders but rich hardly show more concern to help Allah i.e. Masjid.  Do you know that they give bribes at high value before getting their desires fulfilled in big offices but very low they give to Masjid? These also include assisting Islamic schools, requests for; converts to Islam, people asking for dear help because of sickness or high hospital bills, etc. If you see rich fully participating in charity and Sadaqat is not unconnected with pride or show off or recognition. Subanallahi.

Now compare and contrast with poor believers during the Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) who were willing to give Sadaqat but rich today don't give out in the course of Allah. Do you know that nothing stop them from giving for expensive parties?

Yes, few among the rich and prosperous exercise their duties by helping and assisting through sadqah and charity. Allah knows best.

When do we change to help Islam?

May Allah help and protect us from misguidance.
