Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah. As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu. Amma Ba’d.

Praise be to Allaah; we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (Sal Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is His slave and Messenger.

Nigerian Muslims and upcoming Ramadan 2017

How to fast properly during Ramadan in Nigeria; Shifting the focus to the physical aspect of fasting.

ESSENTIAL DO’S AND DON’TS FOR RAMADAN FASTING

Ramadan is a very blessed month and during this month, Allah promises to listen to all legitimate prayers of Muslims. Fasting during this month is a way to protect you from evil and learn patience, humility and control. It is also considered to be a shield against evil and allows Muslims to get rid of their sins. The Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, “Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from ALLAH will have all of his previous sins forgiven.”

One important benefit of fasting is that it helps you to understand the suffering and pain of the poor. Do you know that multitude of people in North East are affected by Boko Haram. Many are in the IDPs (Internally displaced people) in the camp.

Fasting also allows human beings to understand how those who do not have enough money for a meal survive through the day. Therefore, it is believed that fasting makes individuals a better human being as it allows them to associate with the pain of others.

Fasting also allows individuals to learn self-restraint, self-control and sacrifice for the love of a higher deity. It eventually teaches Muslims to connect with their inner self through rigorous praying and worshipping.

DO’S AND DON’TS OF RAMADAN FASTING:

While fasting, Muslims should try to do the following:

1. Practice patience and observe self-control: "O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint." (Holy Quran chapter 2:183).

2. Spend more time in prayer and offer more Taraweeh: "And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided." (Holy Quran chapter 2:186).

3. Recite the Qu'ran daily.

4. Remember the less privileged (pay them Zakah): The companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Ibn Abbas, said, “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous during the month of Ramadan because Angel Jibril used to meet him every night in the month of Ramadan until it ended. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to review the Qur’an with Jibril; and he was more generous with good than the blowing wind.”

5. Break your fast with something nutritious.

6. Eat the pre-dawn meal (Sahoor): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Have Sahoor for verily there is blessing in it.”

7. Feed others: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “He who gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, will receive the same reward for fasting, except that nothing will be reduced from the fasting person’s reward.” (Ahmad and Al-Tirmidhi).

Summary; Recite Quran, act upon the Sunnah, offer Nawafil prayers, pay zakat and be charitable etc.

While fasting during Ramadan, all Muslims should try to follow the things given.

1. Abstaining from all forbidden things, keep away from looting Government treasury, public funds, individual trusts, mosque collections and finances, home and family finances and trusts, etc.

2. Praying increasingly. Keep all pillars of Islam and cardinal principles then increase prayers etc.

3. Reciting Quran and following the Quran teaching. Attend the evening and day sermons or Dawah or Tafseer at your local mosques.

4. Offering Taraweeh prayers. In some areas, people leave their normal mosques to drive to further mosque to pray taraweeh. What evidences do you have?

5. Helping poor in monetary terms to break their fast. Many of the well to do give charity to better off people than weak and needy. Others give to local imams in the villages including Eid Fitr. What evidences do you have?

6. Being patient and observe self-control. Many of our politicians do not keep to that rules and equally their subjects and people who follow them. Do we show our concern to temporary politics than everlasting Islamic rulings on fasting?

While fasting during Ramadan, Muslims should abstain from the following activities:

1. Eating food and drinking water or any other kind of fluid.

2. Getting angry or losing temper.

3. Being impolite, rude or inconsiderate.

4. Using obscene language or bad words.

5. Gossiping and backbiting and insulting.

6. Lying or cheating

7. Arguing, fighting or yelling

8. Indulging in sexual activities

Don'ts:

1. Avoid drinking, smoking, and having sexual relations. Those hiring hotel apartments during fasting for illegal actions with outside ladies should know the consequences thereof.

2. Abstain from blood cupping, blood withdrawal, and using ear drops or inhalers while fasting.

3. Do not listen to music rather occupy your heart with supplication, remembrance of Allah, and the Holy Qur’an.

4. Avoid wasting your time. Time management should be kept strictly.

5. Abstain from idle talk, gossip, lying, quarreling, cursing, and anything that can be hurtful to someone else. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.” (Al-Bukhari)

6. Do not over eat while breaking your fast.

7. Avoid holding grudges. Lower your eyes, don’t fight, conserve your tongues, help poor people, and pray, read the Quran etc.

WHEN RAMADAN FASTS CAN BE SKIPPED :

Islam is not a strict religion as it understands the problems that humans may face. Therefore, Allah allows individuals to skip their Ramadan fasts if they fulfill some conditions. Individuals who can skip the fast include the following:

1. Those who have to travel beyond the city and they do not have the strength to travel without food and water for the entire day.

2. Those who are sick, suffering from a very painful disease or those who need to take medicines regularly.

3. Elderly individuals who are too weak to stay hungry and thirsty for the entire day.

4. Women who are going through their menstruation cycle or those who are going through their postnatal bleeding stage.

5. Women who are expecting as they might need to take medicines regularly otherwise it may affect their or the baby’s health.

6. Those who are mentally ill.

Women who are going through their menstruation cycle, postnatal bleeding or individuals who are sick may also complete their fast after the month of Ramadan is completed.

RAMADAN GUIDELINES TO STAY HEALTHY:

During this month, people face a lot of health related problems because of the sudden change in their routine.

Individuals suffer from problems such as headache, low blood pressure, constipation, gastritis etc. therefore, it is always wise to keep a strict check on your diet during this month. Some guidelines are mentioned below.
