Avoid 70 Major Sins - Series No 3 of 70
Why Sorcery & Black Magic Is A Major Sin?
Ø  Sorcery is a major sin because the sorcerer must necessarily disbelieve and the accursed Devil has no other motive for teaching a person witchcraft than that he might thereby ascribe associates to Allah.
Ø  There are certain things forbidden by Allah Ta’ala and are explicitly explained in the Quran. Among such forbidden acts is the act of black magic and sorcery. ‘Black magic’ may include amulets, talismans, potions, charms, spells, exorcism, witchcraft, oracles, palmistry, fortune telling etc. The forbidding of such things or acts in Islam is for the betterment of mankind.
Ø  Black magic is an undeniable fact as it is mentioned on many occasions in the Holy Quran and Sunnah. However, its practice is denounced in Islam and makes one’s prayer unacceptable for forty days, and believing in what the magician or sorcerer says considers one to be a disbeliever as well.
SORCERY  & BLACK MAGIC: QURANIC INJUCTIONS
MAGIC - MAGICIAN

Remember when Allah said, ''Isa, son of Maryam, remember My blessing to you and to your mother when I reinforced you with the Purest Spirit so that you could speak to people in the cradle and when you were fully grown; and when I taught you the Book and Wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you created a bird-shape out of clay by My permission, and then breathed into it and it became a bird by My permission; and healed the blind and the leper by My permission; and when you brought forth the dead by My permission; and when I held back the tribe of Israel from you, when you brought them the Clear Signs and those of them who disbelieved said, "This is nothing but downright magic"' (5:110)

those who disbelieve would still say, 'This is nothing but downright magic.' (6:7)

Do people find it so surprising that We should reveal to a man among them: 'Warn mankind and give good news to those who believe that they are on a sure footing with their Lord'? The disbelievers say, 'This is downright magic!' (10:2)

When the truth came to them from Us, they said, 'This is downright magic!' Musa said, 'Do you say to the truth when it comes to you, "This is magic"? Magicians are not successful.' They said, 'Have you come to us to turn us from what we found our fathers doing, and to gain greatness in the land? We do not believe you.' Pharaoh said, 'Bring me every knowledgeable magician.' When the magicians came, Musa said to them, 'Throw whatever you have to throw!' When they had thrown, Musa said, 'What you have brought is magic. Allah will certainly prove it false. Allah does not uphold the actions of corrupters.' (10:76-81)

It is He Who created the heavens and the earth in six days when His Throne was on the water, in order to test which of you has the best actions. If you say, 'You will be raised up after death,' those who disbelieve will say, 'This is nothing but downright magic.' (11:7)

He said, 'Have you come to us to expel us from our land by means of your magic, Musa? We will bring you magic to match it. So fix a time between us and you which neither we nor you will fail to keep at a place where we can meet halfway.' He said, 'Your time is the day of the Festival. The people should gather in the morning.' So Pharaoh went away and concocted his scheme and then he arrived. Musa said to them, 'Woe to you! Do not fabricate lies against Allah or He will annihilate you with His punishment. Fabricators of lies are bound to fail.' They argued among themselves about the matter and had a secret conference. They said, 'These two magicians desire by their magic to expel you from your land and abolish your most excellent way of life, so decide on your scheme and then arrive together in force. He who gains the upper hand today will definitely prosper.' They said, 'Musa, will you throw or shall we be the first to throw?' He said, 'No, you throw!' And suddenly their ropes and staffs appeared to him, by their magic, to be slithering about. Musa experienced in himself a feeling of alarm. We said, 'Have no fear. You will have the upper hand. Throw down what is in your right hand. It will swallow up their handiwork. Their handiwork is just a magician's trick. Magicians do not prosper wherever they go.' The magicians threw themselves down in prostration. They said, 'We believe in the Lord of Harun and Musa.' Pharaoh said, 'Do you believe in him before I have authorised you? He is your chief, the one who taught you magic. I will cut off your hands and feet alternately and have you crucified on palm trunks. Then you will know for certain which of us has the harsher and longer lasting punishment.' They said, 'We will never prefer you to the Clear Signs which have come to us nor to Him Who brought us into being. Decide on any judgment you like. Your jurisdiction only covers the life of this world. We have believed in our Lord so that He may forgive us for our mistakes and for the magic which you forced us to perform. Allah is better and longer lasting.' (20:57-73)

Their hearts are distracted. Those who do wrong confer together secretly, saying, 'Is this man anything but a human being like yourselves? Do you succumb to magic with your eyes wide open?' (21:3)

He (Pharaoh) said to the High Council round about him, 'This certainly is a skilled magician who desires by his magic to expel you from your land, so what do you recommend?' They said, 'Detain him and his brother and send out marshals to the cities, to bring you all the skilled magicians.' So the magicians were assembled for a meeting on a specified day. The people were asked, 'Are you all assembled so we can follow the magicians if they are the winners?' When the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, 'Will we be rewarded if we are the winners?' He said, 'Yes, and in that case you will be among those brought near.' Musa said to them, 'Throw whatever it is you are going to throw!' They threw down their ropes and staffs and said, 'By the might of Pharaoh we are the winners.' But Musa threw down his staff and at once it swallowed up what they had fabricated. The magicians threw themselves down, prostrating. They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all the worlds, the Lord of Musa and Harun.' He said, 'Have you believed in him before I authorised you? He is your chief who taught you magic. But you will soon know! I will cut off your alternate hands and feet and I will crucify every one of you.' They said, 'We do not care! We are returning to our Lord. We remain hopeful that our Lord will forgive us our mistakes for being the first of the believers.' (26:34-51)

When Our Signs came to them in all their clarity, they said, 'This is downright magic.' (27:13)

But when Musa brought them Our Clear Signs they said, 'This is nothing but trumped-up magic. We never heard anything like this among our earlier forefathers.' (28:36)

But when the truth did come to them from Us they said, 'Why has he not been given the same as Musa was given?' But did they not previously reject what Musa was given? They say, 'Two magicians who back each other up.' And they say, 'We reject both of them.' (28:48)

When Our Clear Signs are recited to them, they say, 'This is nothing but a man who wants to debar you from what your fathers used to worship.' They say, 'This is nothing but an invented lie.' Those who disbelieve say to the truth when it comes to them, 'This is nothing but downright magic.' (34:43)

They say, 'This is just downright magic.' (37:15)

They are surprised that a warner should come to them from among themselves. The disbelievers say, 'This is a lying magician.' (38:4)

We sent Musa with Our Signs and clear authority to Pharaoh, Haman and Qarun. But they said, 'A lying magician.' (40:23-24)
But when the truth came to them they said, 'This is magic and we reject it.' (43:30)

They said (to Musa), 'Magician, invoke your Lord for us by the contract He has made with you and we shall certainly follow the guidance.' (43:49)

When Our Clear Signs are recited to them, those who reject say to the truth when it comes to them, 'This is downright magic.' (46:7)
But he (Pharaoh) turned away with his forces, saying, 'A magician or a madman!' (51:39)

Equally, no Messenger came to those before them without their saying, 'A magician or a madman!' (51:52)

So is this magic? Or is it that you do not see? (52:15)

And when 'Isa son of Maryam said, 'Tribe of Israel, I am the Messenger of Allah to you, confirming the Torah which came before me and giving you the good news of a Messenger after me whose name is Ahmad.' When he brought them the Clear Signs, they said, 'This is downright magic.' (61:6)

He said, 'This is nothing but magic from the past.' (74:24)

SOOTHSAYER
Remind them then! For, by the blessing of your Lord, you are neither a soothsayer nor a madman. (52:29)
Why Sorcery Is A Major Sin?
Allah, the Almighty, says,
{Solomon did not disbelieve but Satan disbelieved, teaching men magic, and such things as came down at Babylon to the angels Harut and Marut. But neither of these taught anyone (such things) without saying, 'We are only for trial,' so do not blaspheme.' They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not harm anyone except by Allah's permission. And they learned what harmed them, not what profited them. And they knew that the buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of the Hereafter.} (AI- Baqarah: 102)
Thus, you might find some people who are astray delving in learning sorcery and thinking that it is just unlawful. Actually, they do not consider what they do as disbelief, but it is! They embark on learning all kinds of sorcery: Pure sorcery, increasing or decreasing the love between a man and a woman, making a man important and the like. All of these practices are done by means of some unknown words, most of which lead to unbelief.
Sheikh `Atiyyah Saqr, former head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee, adds:
“The word "magic" is mentioned in the Qur'an 60 times. The verse 102 of surat Al-Baqarah has the following implications:
1- Magic has been known as a well-established fact regardless of it changing the forms of things.
2- Magic involves things that may be beneficial or harmful, as Allah says: “learned from these two, magic by which they might cause a separation between a man and his wife…”
3- Magic cannot have any effect save by the Will of Almighty Allah, as Allah says: “…and they cannot hurt with it any one except with Allah’s permission…”
4- Adhering to magic renders one a disbeliever, as Allah says: “…but the Shaitans disbelieved, they taught men sorcery…”
The views of Muslim scholars carry culminate in the following:
1-Attributing the effect of the magic to anything other than Allah renders one a disbeliever.
2-Practicing magic or sorcery for the sake of harming people is totally forbidden. Based on this, it is a form of disbelief to torture people with a magic spell or subject them to the evil of jinn.”
In brief, the first and foremost requirement as regards dispelling black magic is to believe firmly that no one, however great his powers may be, can benefit or harm one except if Allah wills it. Then every Muslim should empower his/herself through practicing Islam, reading the Qur’an and consistency in dhikr and du`a’. In particular, one may do the following:
1)      perform prayers regularly;
2)      recite morning and evening supplications;
3)      start everything in Allah’s Name and seek Allah’s Protection and Refuge before taking a bath;
4)      recite or listen to the recitation of surat Al-Baqarah daily for some days (a week for instance); and
5)      put his/her trust in Allah, invoke Him always and keep away from sins.
SORCERY  & BLACK MAGIC: FROM SUNNAH AND TRADITIONS
The penalty for a sorcerer is to be killed. This is because he is an unbeliever. The Prophet
(pbuh) said, "Avoid the seven heinous sins.”1
And he mentioned sorcery. "The penalty for a sorcerer is the sword.”[1]
Bijalah Ibn Abah related, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us one year before his death and said, "Kill every sorcerer (male or female).”[2]
Wahb Ibn Munabbih said, "I read in a book: 'Allah the Almighty says, 'There is no god but Me. He is not of Me who practices sorcery, or asks someone to practice with him. The one who foretells or the foretold, the one who seeks an omen or for whom an omen is sought.”[3]
`Ali Ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said, A fortune teller is a sorcerer, a sorcerer is a disbeliever."
Abu Musa AI-Ashari, may Allah be pleased with him, related that the Prophet (pbuh) said,
"The drunkard, the one who severs the ties of kinship, and whoever believes in sorcery will not enter Paradise.”[4]
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Prophet (pbuh) said,
"Incantations, amulets and spells are Shirk (polytheism).”[5]
These are treated as Shirk because the ignorant believes that these things can affect what has been predetermined by Allah. However, AIKhattabi said, "Incantations or healing words are permitted if they consist of the Qur'an or the Most Beautiful Names of Allah."
The Prophet (pbuh) used to recite (incantate) AI-Hasan and AlHusain by saying,
"I seek refuge for you in Allah's Perfect Words from every Devil, beast or envious .”[6]
Why Islam Is Against Black Magic And Sorcery?
Islam forbids black magic (sihr) and many Quran verses and Hadith have strongly condemned this as a sinful act. For instance Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) says:
1)      “Whoever blows on knots practices magic, and whoever practices magic is a mushrik (polytheist).” (At-Tabarani)
2)      The word “sihr” has been mentioned almost 60 times in the Quran, explaining how the non-believers attributed the miracles of Allah’s prophets with black magic. These verses have been stated to clear that Allah’s messengers can never be like the worldly magicians.
3)      Black magic basically involves the worship of Satan and evil spirits to gain demonic powers and harm the innocent people of Allah. Worshipping anything other than The Allah is considered “kufr” in Islam and thus these magicians are practicing the art of Infidelity (kufr) which is totally prohibited in Islam. The basic motive of black magic practitioners is to harm and mislead others by delusion, which is again outside the boundaries of Islam. One more thing observed in black magicians is that they start believing the world is in their hands and they can do whatever they want, forgetting that the supreme creator of the entire living and non living things is alone Allah. They even exploit innocent people into believing the same. In order to prevent the human generation from falling into the offence of “shirk”, Allah has forbidden black magic and sorcery.
4)      In order to relieve a person from the clutches of black magic, reciting certain Quran verses can have a tremendous impact. Quran, the one Book among many, has been sent as a cure and mercy for its followers and for those who seek this Holy book for healing purposes. Recitation of Surah Al-Falak, Surah Al-Naas, and the above mentioned verses of Surah Al-baqarah can be helpful in dispelling the effects of black magic.
Although no one has the power to harm or protect us except Allah, yet every Muslim should empower them through practicing Islam, reading the Qur’an, offering Prayers and following Allah’s commands.
QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION
Black Magic: Rulings & Remedy[7]
QUESTION: Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. My brother was previously engaged to a cousin but that engagement was broken because of family meddling, and that ended the issue, he is longer interested in the girl. But he would like to get married, so we made some picks for him but all of them turned out a disappointment. Could it be that someone is doing magic against my brother. Could you please furnish me about about black magic? Is it real and effective? If so, how could one dispel that magic according to the Qur’an & hadith? Jazakum Allah khayran.
ANSWER:
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear sister in Islam, we commend your pursuit of knowledge and your keenness to seek what is lawful and avoid what is not. We earnestly implore Allah to bless your efforts in this honorable way.

As regards your question, we’d like to state first that black magic is an undeniable fact, yet this does not mean when we face any problem we think that it should necessarily be a black magic. The fact that your brother did not get married till now is not necessarily due to a black magic done against him. You should search for the real reasons behind this. In most cases, these are mere Satanic whispers which Satan make use of to spoil people’s life and harms their commitment to religion. To get rid of such Satanic whispers a Muslim should be keen to read the authentic supplications particularly ayat Al-Kursi and surat Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas.

Generally speaking, it should be demonstrated that black magic is one of the well-established facts, and it is mentioned in the Qur’an and the Sunnah. As for the Islamic legal status on practicing black magic, it is forbidden, and this makes one’s prayer unaccepted for forty days, and believing in what magician or sorcerer says renders one a disbeliever.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever blows on knots practices magic, and whoever practices magic is a mushrik (polytheist).” (Reported by At-Tabarani)

`Abdullah ibn Mas`ud reported, “Anyone who goes to a diviner, a practitioner of magic or a soothsayer, asking something and believing in what he says, denies what was revealed to Muhammad.” (Reported by Al-Bazzar and Abu Ya`la)

Magic can be dispelled through magicians themselves or sorcerers or through applying their methods. However, it is forbidden to go to a magician or a soothsayer or the like to dispel the magic as stated in the hadiths of the Prophet.

Magic can also be dispelled by the power of the Glorious Qur’an, which was sent down as a cure and mercy for believers; doing so is highly commendable. This is based on what is known in the Sunnah that angel Gabriel used the Qur’an (Al-Mu`awwidhatayn, or the Two Protective Surahs, i.e. Al-Falaq and An-Nas) in dispelling the evil charm done to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by the Jews. Moreover, surat Al-Baqarah is known to have the power of driving away evil spirits and dispelling magic.
Regarding Black magic and how to dispel it, the eminent Muslim scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Hanooti, states:
“The Qur'an talks about black magic in surat Al-Baqarah (Al-Baqarah: 102).
Another reference from the Qur’an is surat Al-Falaq:
“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn. From the evil of what He has created. And from the evil of the utterly dark night when it comes. And from the evil of those who blow on knots. And from the evil of the envious when he envies.” (Al-Falaq: 1-5)
There is another verse that is relevant to this issue from surat Al-Baqarah:
“Those who swallow down usury cannot arise except as one whom Shaitan has prostrated by (his) touch does rise. That is because they say, trading is only like usury; and Allah has allowed trading and forbidden usury. To whomsoever then the admonition has come from his Lord, then he desists, he shall have what has already passed, and his affair is in the hands of Allah; and whoever returns (to it)-- these are the inmates of the fire; they shall abide in it.” (Al-Baqarah: 275)
These verses are very clear in reference to the power Allah made through these jinn in magic or possession. When you say, a`udhu billahi mina Ash-shaytani Ar-rajim (I seek refuge and protection in Allah from Satan, the accursed), then certainly Allah accepts protecting you and giving you refuge against any evildoer. Reading the Qur’an and making dhikr will be helpful to overcome any shaytan’s plan. Allah says, “Verily, the plan of a shaytan is weak.” I advise you both to seek the help from Allah through practicing full Islam and avoiding any sinful arena or action.”
Allah Almighty knows best.
